Your outback adventure kicks off before sunrise, leaving the city behind while most are still hitting snooze. After a quick caffeine crawl out of Adelaide, we cruise north to the sleepy town of Wirrabara. Here, towering silo art brings colour and culture to the streets and Julie's Bakery serves up the kind of country comfort food you didn't know you needed.

2

Arkaroo Rock

Next stop: Arkaroo Rock, tucked deep in Adnyamathanha Country. This is more than a hike, it's a time machine. The 3.2 km trail weaves through native bush to a rock shelter etched with ochre and charcoal art that's over 5,000 years old. These ancient markings tell the story of Akurra, the giant serpent whose body shaped this land. It's raw, sacred, and completely unforgettable.

3

Wilpena Pound

As the sun dips and shadows stretch across the ranges, we arrive at Wilpena Pound, our base for the night. Here, a local Yura guide welcomes us to Country, sharing stories first spoken in Yura Ngawarla, then brought to life in English. It's not just a greeting; it's an invitation to connect with the spirit of the land and those who have cared for it for millennia. To wrap the day, it's back to camp for dinner before rolling out your swag beneath the stars, where the Milky Way becomes your ceiling. Distance travelled today is approximately 450Km

Starting from the Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre, this 7 km return trail weaves through shady Pound Gap, where river red gums tower overhead and emus and kangaroos might casually photobomb your walk. You'll hit the historic Hills Homestead first, a great spot to catch your breath. From there, it's a short, steep push to the lookout. If you're up for it, the upper platform dishes out panoramas that'll blow your boots off.

Warren Gorge

Back on level ground, we explore Old Wilpena Station, where the outback grit of early pastoral days meets ancient Adnyamathanha Country. Back on the bus, travel to Hawker for lunch and a quick stop at the Jeff Morgan Gallery, part art, part time warp. It doesn't get much better then this. The tour itself is a week long, in which you'll reciece a months worth of experiences. We saw some amazing landscapes, sunsets, sunrises, flora, fauna and aboriginal culture. Flinders ranges, King's Canyon, Kata Tjuta and Uluru were the absolute highlights. The longs roadtrips however, were broken up with nice stops along the way such as the opal mine city of Coober Pedy, Fred's panorama and mineral museum, viewpoints and many roadhouses So there was no dull moment and plenty of opportunity to stretch your legs. Our tourguide Eli was amazing (give this man a raise). He was very passionate and enthusiastic about the different aspects of the tour, throughout the week. He was able to find us the best hikes and viewpoints before anybody else would be there, without us feeling rushed. Especially to get the garden of Eden in King's Canyon to ourselves for a while, aswell as the Valley of the winds at Kata Tjuta was very special. This means of course we had to rise before dawn, often after a short night, but that was totally worth it. We slept in swags, which are oversized sleeping bags in which you have a mattress and an actual sleeping bag. This means u can see the amazing outback starlit skies from your bed. Also they roll up to make camp quickly or make a quick getaway. We did this tour in October of 2025.

How to describe this really fantastisc trip. It had everything: an enthusiastic, well informed and dedicated guide, good swags and most of all all those wonderfull places we went. You can read them in the itinerary but during the trip you are in the middle of them and experiencing them to the fullest. Views, wild animals, good food all of it was there. Thanks Eli we had a great time. Sapperdeflap!

I have travelled extensively all over the world, and I can say that the experience we had with Elliott for 7 days was by far the best I've seen. Our lovely group enjoyed a full week of adventures and experiences well beyond what we expected. Elliott took care of everything, for 16 hours a day every day! Every extra request - from picking up souvenirs for people to extending certain parts of the trip was taken care of for us. We had the best spots for each sightseeing opportunity and got to see the best of every experience free from the usual crowds. Thanks, Elliott, for giving us all the trip of a lifetime. I would do the tour, or any other tour, again in a heartbeat!

  • Great swag-camping tour to Uluru with Untamed Escapes

My partner and I did the 7-day Adelaide-Uluru tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highlights for me were swag camping in the Flinders Ranges, hiking the Kings Canyon rim walk, and seeing Uluru and Kata Tjuta from afar at sunset from the viewpoints of Yulara. We had a small group and all got along well. This was our second tour with Untamed Escapes and we knew we were in safe hands with the same guide from our first tour, Hannah. She was knowledgeable, organised, enthusiastic, accommodating and energetic throughout which brought the tour to life. Glad that we went in September – it was cold at night in some places, but mercifully cooler in the day as well in the Red Centre so weren’t struggling with heat. We hired the sleeping bags offered by Untamed Escapes which were good for the cold nights. Would recommend bringing a fly net which can be worn over a brimmed hat.

The 8-day tour from Adelaide to Uluru was incredibly great and I am still quite inspired by this trip! Eli, our driver/guide, is simply the best! With his cheerful, friendly and authentic manner, he contributed significantly to this unique experience! The drive north is definitely "a ride" and especially in the winter months it can get sensitively cold in the swag at night. Thermal underwear and a really warm sleeping bag are game-changers. A hot water bottle can certainly help - better be safe than sorry 😅 The places we stayed were unique and I am very grateful that Mick and Shirley gave us an insight into their culture and traditions. That's what makes the Untamed Escapes trip so special: here Aboriginal people talk about themselves and no one else about them! If you have the time and the seat meat, you should definitely do this 'iconic tour'! That it is a camping tour (the swag is not a tent!) should be clear to everyone 😉 Get out of the comfort zone, into adventure!

Booked the tour kinda spontaneous and I have to say it was one of the best trips ever. The group was fun and divers. We got blessed with Eli as our tour guide. He was doing such a great job by managing several different jobs: driver, tour guide, chef. He knew all our names after the first day, made sure from the beginning that everyone felt comfortable. His inspiration and knowledge about the indigenous people is remarkable and that all at his age. He found the right balance between staying within the schedule, but also be spontaneous and relaxed. I cannot thank him enough to make this tour unforgettable.

The Adelaide to Uluru tour with Untamed Escapes was an absolutely incredible tour. Traveling through the middle of Australia, camping in swags at night under the stars, and hiking beautiful trails to catch stunning sunrises and sunsets was a surreal experience. The tour is also a very informative one that really takes into consideration the history and the culture of the aboriginal people whose lands we travel through. Our tour guide, Eli, was phenomenal and did a great job of taking care of us through the entire duration of the tour; he was very knowledgable about everything having to do with the Outback and his enthusiasm for his work was very evident. The buildup and anticipation of finally making it to Uluru by the end of the tour was extremely rewarding and I cannot recommend this tour enough for people who really want to fully experience the magic of the Outback.
