Experiencing Southeast Alaska and its incredible wildlife is a must for any visitor, and there’s no better way to do it than aboard the Goleta, right here in Sitka. On this tour, you’ll have the chance to view and photograph Humpback Whales, Orcas, Sea Otters, Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, Puffins, Brown Bears, and a variety of sea birds.

Please note, wildlife sightings depend on the weather and time of year, and while we do our best to provide an unforgettable experience, there is no guarantee of spotting specific animals.

With extensive experience on these waters as a commercial fisherman and dedicated surfer, I can offer unique insights into the local ecosystem and the day-to-day family life in Sitka. Each tour is personalized to suit the day's weather conditions and your individual goals, ensuring a memorable adventure. With only six guests per tour, I can offer a more intimate and comfortable experience.

What To Expect

Your tour will depart from Crescent Harbor in downtown Sitka, where we'll cruise through the stunning islands of Sitka Sound. We’ll explore the shores of Baranof Island and Kruzof Island, offering incredible wildlife sightings along the way. You’ll have the opportunity to view and photograph Humpback Whales, Orcas, Sea Otters, Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, Puffins, Brown Bears, and a variety of sea birds. As we navigate these pristine waters, you'll also be treated to breathtaking views of the volcanic Mount Edgecumbe and the impressive mountain skyline of Sitka—perfect for capturing unforgettable photographs. We had an absolutely incredible time on our whale watching tour with Rick! He’s been a local since he was just 3 years old, and his knowledge of the area and wildlife made the experience even more special. We saw it all—breaching whales, sea lions, otters, eagles, and even bears eating salmon. It was truly the highlight of our trip and an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend this tour with Rick! More pics to come!

Magic in Sitka! Sitka AmeriCorps and ArtistYear members kicked off their service term with a wildlife tour—thank you to Coastal Tours for delivering an incredible experience. This new-to-Sitka crew was thrilled to view humpback whales, sea otters, and bears. Everyone was hydrated, cozy and entertained and the Sitka weather was at its best. We had an amazing whale watching tour with Rick and Coastal Tours Sitka! The weather was absolutely perfect, and Rick knew exactly where to take us for the best viewing. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the animals and the area, which made the experience both fun and educational. We saw so much wildlife—whales, sea lions, otters, and even salmon! The boat was the perfect size, very clean, and even had snacks available. There was a covered area on board, though with such beautiful weather we didn’t need it. This was truly a highlight of our trip to Sitka, and I’d highly recommend Rick and Coastal Tours to anyone visiting! Edit to add- I have videos of so many whales and this site will not let me upload them. I even have still shots but it is not cooperating.

We had an unforgettable experience with Coastal Tour Sitka. Captain Rick ensured that every aspect of our trip exceeded expectations. As a Sitka native with extensive knowledge of the area, he provided both expert insight and a wealth of experience in wildlife viewing. He guided us to the perfect locations where we observed an incredible range of wildlife: approximately ten humpback whales, a raft of sea otters, sea lions basking on a buoy, and even black bears along the shoreline. The boat was comfortable, the ride smooth, and the surrounding scenery absolutely breathtaking. Captain Rick also provided snacks and beverages, answered all of our questions, and shared engaging stories about Sitka and its wildlife. His professionalism, combined with genuine hospitality, made this tour both memorable and enjoyable. This was truly a remarkable and magical experience—highly recommended as a must-do when visiting Sitka.

This experience completely beat my expectations! Really easy to find Rick and his boat from port. We saw probably 50 whales, a sea otter, a jellyfish, and a bear. Rick knows exactly where to go to find wildlife (also took us to a waterfall) and provided great information about the animals and life in Sitka. Traveling with a kiddo, it was also peace of mind that there was a bathroom on board! I highly recommend this tour.

We were picked up right at the dock when we got off the ship. There were snacks and waters to drink. Saw lots of whales up close. Also saw sea otters, bald eagles and seals. Rick was very informative about lots of things including the wales and local fishing. He has lived in Sitka his whole life. The boat was super comfortable with a bathroom and heated inside if you get cold. After the tour he dropped us off right at the dock in town. Highly recommend this tour.

Our family had an amazing morning on the water with Rick. His boat is clean and comfortable and everyone in our family of 5 (kids 9-16) genuinely enjoyed his company. Rick showed us an abundance of whales (and sea lions, sea otters, bald eagles, and their nest) and I enjoyed learning about what it is like to grow up and raise a family in Sitka. Spending time exploring the sound with a local was a real treat - educational, beautiful and exciting. A highlight of our trip. Highly recommend Coastal Tours Sitka!
