Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stands out as one of the world’s largest mosques, and the only one that captures unique interactions between Islam and world cultures. Sheikh Zayed's vision for the Grand Mosque was to incorporate architectural styles from different Muslim civilizations and celebrate cultural diversity by creating a haven that is truly diverse and inspirational in its foundation. The mosque’s architects were British, Italian and Emirati, and design inspiration was borrowed parts of Turkey, Morocco, Pakistan, and Egypt among other Islamic countries, revealing a glistening architectural marvel with an astonishing capacity of 40,000 worshippers and visitors. The open-door policy invites tourists and celebrants from all around the world who can witness the spectacular onion-top domes, the reflective pools that engulf the courtyard and the iconic prayer hall, which not only overflows with blissful sunlight but also houses the world’s biggest chandelier and carpet, both meticulously handmade. Be sure to spot the calligraphy encircling the hollows of the domes, etched with verses from the Quran and painted with gold leaves in An-Naskh lettering.
Emirates Heritage Village
Visit the Heritage village to experience the traditional aspects of the desert way of life, and immerse yourself in the time capsule that brings to life a souk, a mosque and an encampment from pre-modernized Abu Dhabi. You can shop, explore artifacts and watch artisans making pottery, blowing glass and weaving fabric on a loom. Run by the Emirates Heritage Club, this reconstruction of a traditional oasis village provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past and features public workshops where craftsmen demonstrate traditional skills such as metal work, pottery, weaving and spinning. The craftsmen share their skills with visitors, and occasionally offer them a chance to try them out. The little spice shop within the village offers a range of dried herbs, handmade soaps and plenty of souvenirs to collect.

We enjoyed experiencing Abu Dhabi. So I gave it three stars. We loved the city, however, we were very disappointed in the lack of guidance and information about the sites we visited. We wanted to know more, but our questions were not answered as there was a language barrier. Ayoob could talk in the car, but if we asked him questions, there was zero reply. So weird. And when we were out and about outside of the car, there was no information given. Ayoob would just point and say go here. I was not aware that we were on our own going into the grand mosque, Heritage Village, etc. When we arrived at Heritage Village, we were just told to go in and walk around. We had no idea what the area was. When we went to the grand masque, when we showed up, Ayoob said our skirts to our ankles fine, but three-quarter length sleeves and a linen top would not work. So we had to buy clothes there. That would’ve been good knowledge to know ahead of time. Neither did I know we would just blindly walk around on our own. I felt rushed. Halfway through the day, Ayoob said the dates market would be our last stop. when I questioned that, and told him we paid for a full day tour, he was surprised. When I mentioned a couple of places that was listed, we would see, evidently we had passed them because he didn’t realize it was a full day tour. So he took us to the Louvre museum instead. While we liked the museum, I did not appreciate the fact we missed a couple items that were on the list, and that our tour guide thought that we were on a half day and not a full day. Ayoob also late showing up to the hotel, and we were the only guests on the tour.

The masque visit made the whole trip worth while. The size, cleanliness, friendly staff, and beauty were all beyond words. The rest of the tour was ok. The guide spoke a very unclear English and can up with a bunch of minor things to see just to fill up time. Seeing this city is a worthwhile must and the good parts out shined the bad parts.

We were collected on time from our hotel by our driver. My husband was asked to go put on trousers and myself was told of nothing. This proved arward as the grand mosque had a dress code which we were not informed of and I had to squeeze into a cover over and head scarf that was too small. If I had of been told this in the hotel I would of been better prepared. The stops were all of interest but we were not given a lot of information about a lot of them. We found ourselves walking around and finding it out for ourselves. If it even followed the the sequence of stops as per the booking information we may of been better prepared. The driver never asked us if we’d like to stop for lunch etc we were on the go all day and was starving by the end. He did however kindly drop us off at the Dubai mall. Our driver was very friendly and explained a lot but we found the language barrier at times hard. In short we had a great day and packed in a lot in that time which is what we wanted from the trip.

As frequent travelers we love visiting tourist areas, but really love to go to those hidden gems that only a local guide knows about, and Abudhabi knowledge of Abu Dhabi is excellent. Along with several unique places he took us really made the trip very memorable.
