OX guides and staff are true pros. They have a new route of their own that bypasses the hardest part of the hike while keeping the group mostly in the shade, that alone is worth booking with them. Talk about a pleasant and much appreciated surprise! Our group had 38 people and everyone there were absolutely lovely to chat and hang out with. We enjoyed each other's company so much that we created a whatsapp community to stay in touch and share our photos and videos. The logistics are well thought out from the gear, food, drink, equipment, etc. You can literally show up with your boots, hiking clothes and weather clothes and they will be able to handle the rest for you. OX leaves for camp early and in kind leaves for the Fuego hike before the other groups so you will get the best view possible if you decide to do that hike the same day you reach camp.

The hike itself is challenging ( approximately 6 hours to base camp), but the experience of the erupting El Fuego at dusk ( which is now occurring with remarkable frequency) and the pre-dawn hike up to the 13,00-foot summit hike up Acatenango volcano (dormant) are bucket list experiences. The guides are excellent, the views from the mountain top stunning, getting to know your fellow hikers an enriching multicultural experience. Bring warm clothes since mountain temperatures approach freezing at night. And expect to be woken several times a night by the sonic-boom like explosions that herald another explosive eruption.

OX expeditions distinguishes itself from other organized Acatenango-hikes by the great preparation and professional guidance. It started with a pleasant and accessible meeting the night before, be sure to go there. You get advice, important info and get to know your group and guide (credits to Henry!). They provide super good material that is neatly maintained. Bring plenty of warm clothing, the cold at the top is unseen and definitely rent hiking poles (also possible on site from locals). This organization works with local guides who know the volcano by heart, people with experience, an eye for safety and an understanding of the difficulty of this climb (don't underestimate this). Everything is provided by OX expeditions: good food, plenty of water, hygienic sleeping accommodation and all while respecting nature. I did my research, and am very satisfied that I did this hike with OX expeditions. Tip: the Fuego hike is a nice extra, the morning summit hike is really a must!

Had an amazing time. Our guide, Henry, was the absolute best. He is chill, fun, knowledgeable and very well organized. From A to Z, Henry was concerned about everyone's safety whilst making sure we were having fun. The atmosphere of the group was absolutely on point. I 100% recommend going with this company and If you're lucky enough to have the same guide as we did, ENJOY!! Ps: The summit hike was probably in top 5 best days of my life. Thanks for everything!

We booked the overnight tour to Atacenango. The tour was perfectly organized by Ox Expeditions, you could easily rent all equipment and everything was prepared in the camp. Our tour guide Alonzo was great; he took care of everything, made sure of a good atmosphere and organized everything well. The food was also very delicious and rich. The tour we can highly recommend!

Team friendly and nice beautiful excursions our problem was the tent at the camp that had the zip broken for a long time and the management is not interested in repairing it. We practically slept outdoors. The great regret was that when we chose this tour it seemed very serious during the meeting they repeated that if someone wasted or broke something he had to pay it back but it does not apply to them. Sorry for the guides and porters who were fantastic.

This may be the best tour of my life. I have been wanting to see Fuego for years now and OX made this experience unforgettable. Our guides, Henry (lead guide) and Kawasaki (assistant guide), made sure we were comfortable, safe and laughing the entire time! It is clear they absolutely love what they do and love to share the magic of the volcanoes with the guests. The fact that they allowed us to stay at the Fuego Plateau for a while past sunset to really enjoy the eruptions after dark from up close was amazing. What a surreal experience. Also, they absolutely spoiled us with food. I go backpacking often and know that typically backcountry food is not great, so I really didn't think we would eat well on this trek but I was completely wrong. A delicious breakfast burrito and coffee from a local cafe, a delicious empanada for lunch halfway up, almond loaf and hot chocolate once we arrived at camp, WINE at the summit for sunset, and pasta and ginger tea once we got back to camp. OX has amazing ratings for a reason and, if I were to go again, I would choose OX every time.

Had an amazing experience with OX on this hike. Axel was our tour guide and he was a great energy to be around, always encouraging us when the struggle of the challenge started to kick in. We took frequent breaks making the mountain of a task much more manageable and enjoyable.

I enjoyed the hike up Acetenango volcano. The tour guides were kind and well-prepared and the atmosphere was good. Pick-up and drop-off all worked well, as well as the hike up and down. The group was quite large (30 people), which meant that tracking up was a bit slow at times, following each other back to back. However, having a large group also meant you made friends with more people! The huts up the top were alright but could really do with some more cleaning, as the tables were quite dirty and I also wonder how often those sleeping bags get a wash. Finally, for the price (which is more expensive than other tours), I really think the toilet situation could be improved. The single toilet at the hut stinks like hell and really needs to be improved. Please consider using saw dust for smell and cleaning the site regularly.
