Had an amazing experience with OX on this hike. Axel was our tour guide and he was a great energy to be around, always encouraging us when the struggle of the challenge started to kick in. We took frequent breaks making the mountain of a task much more manageable and enjoyable.

I enjoyed the hike up Acetenango volcano. The tour guides were kind and well-prepared and the atmosphere was good. Pick-up and drop-off all worked well, as well as the hike up and down. The group was quite large (30 people), which meant that tracking up was a bit slow at times, following each other back to back. However, having a large group also meant you made friends with more people! The huts up the top were alright but could really do with some more cleaning, as the tables were quite dirty and I also wonder how often those sleeping bags get a wash. Finally, for the price (which is more expensive than other tours), I really think the toilet situation could be improved. The single toilet at the hut stinks like hell and really needs to be improved. Please consider using saw dust for smell and cleaning the site regularly.

Here’s a polished, natural-sounding review that keeps your honesty and adds a bit of flow—still very you, just tightened up for clarity and readability. ⸻ Acatenango Volcano Hike with OX Expeditions — Amazing experience, with one piece of honest advice My girlfriend and I (both 35, in good shape) recently completed the Acatenango Volcano hike with OX Expeditions, and overall it was a fantastic experience—one I’d absolutely recommend to anyone visiting Guatemala. That said, I wanted to share a bit of honest advice for those considering the optional hike to Fuego Volcano. I consider myself quite athletic, but after roughly seven hours of hiking to reach base camp on day one, the additional 4–5 hour round trip to Fuego was a lot. By the time you arrive and wait for sunset, it’s not dark enough to fully appreciate the eruptions the way you might expect. In my opinion, the view from Fuego itself isn’t worth the extra effort—especially when the view from Acatenango base camp is already phenomenal (and honestly, just as impressive). Unfortunately, I was too exhausted to attempt the summit of Acatenango Volcano the next morning—but everyone I spoke to, and every photo and video I saw, confirmed it’s absolutely worth it. If you have to choose between the two, do the Acatenango summit. Waking up around 5:45 a.m. to watch the sunrise and see lava spewing from Fuego in the distance is something special. Lastly, huge credit to Axel, our guide. He was there every step of the way—checking in on everyone, offering encouragement, and making sure we had what we needed. Beyond being a great guide, he’s just a genuinely good person. All in all: highly recommend OX Expeditions, just be thoughtful about how much you want to push yourself. Either way, it’s an unforgettable experience.

An unforgettable experience from start to finish! Hiking Acatenango and spending the night on the volcano with Ox Expeditions was perfectly organized. Seeing Volcán de Fuego erupt so close was absolutely breathtaking and surreal. I traveled with German friends, and they felt very comfortable, safe, and welcomed the entire time. The guides were professional, kind, and supportive, the group atmosphere was great, the food was delicious, and the overall vibe was amazing. We are all very grateful for this experience and highly recommend Ox Expeditions to anyone looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure!

OX handle the tour logistics, meanwhile, you focus on the trek, which is very challenging, and enjoy the awesomeness of the volcanoes. The pre-excursion briefing was helpful. It shaped expectations for the tour and ensured everybody was best prepared. If required, they generously provide various items, at no additional cost, including backpack, fleece, jacket, poncho, beanie, gloves and headlight. There’s an option to rent hiking poles and a porter to carry your backpack. Both are clever options. I can’t understate the difficulty of this hike, especially given the altitude, distance and freezing conditions. The campsite is well situated near volcanoes acatenango and fuego, both of which are optional hikes from base camp. The cabins are rustic and sleep 5. Toilet is communal. No shower facility. Food was basic. Fuego is very active. Awesome experience to get up close and see/hear/feel it erupt every 10 minutes or so. Henry, our tour guide, was a champion. A strong leader. Clear and positive in his communication to the group. Highly recommend OX for the overnight volcano tour.

You pay for what you get but in this case, I think it’s fair to say that they more than delivered! My girlfriend and I agreed that the overnight hike was the highlight of our Guatemala vacation and Axel, our tour guide, kept up an incredible energy the entire time (and had an awesome playlist to hike to). Food and accommodations were more than adequate and the views, well, just see for yourself.

Guide Henry is well versed in English. He and the local guides were nice, kept a steady pace, plenty of breaks, and made sure everyone was okay. Would recommend going with OX Expeditions.

It’s hard to give a bad grade: the fact that you’re so close to an active volcano is such a once-in-a-lifetime experience that it makes almost everything forget. We had a very good guide with Liam. However, the company OX I personally would not recommend to anyone. Unprofessional beginner mistakes: - Forgetting blankets, so we were so cold at night with just our sleeping bag that that is why several skipped the morning walk to the top of the Acetenango. This could have been compensated by not (or less) charging for the Fuego walk. However, they have not even apologized. - After asking twice if my dietary needs were not a problem, because I like to take care of something myself if it is annoying, I assumed that this would be okay: that lasted until lunch.. "I'm very sorry, we'll get back to that tomorrow in the office, we'll find out where this went wrong". Of course I haven't heard anything more about it. Deliberately opting for a better and more expensive provider, I received a message 2 days before departure that we would not be staying in a cabin, but in a large tent with cots. An upgrade was called it. We could cancel if we didn't want to. However, there is a reason that we all booked early, because the other reputable providers no longer have a place. In short, with your back against the wall. Unlike many others, the tent camp had no direct view of the Fuego. Only one didn't have their own toilet, we had to go to a camp next door. And didn't have a single chair or table to sit and/or eat, unlike all the other campsites I've seen! I've paid 100, but I've talked to people who've gotten 50 more. The Fuego hike is also exceptionally expensive at OX, friends have paid less for that too.. I don't like to write negative reviews, but it's important that people are prepared. I gave them the opportunity to meet me/us; financially or with an apology.
