Atm Cave Belize (actun Tunichil Muknal)
Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place. This is the final resting place of “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.
Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”. We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides. We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio. Difficulty level: Moderate (involved some easy swimming and life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, who will also be escorted by our highly trained guide).

What a great experience! Richard was a fantastic guide who's very knowledgable of the cave and its history, a great storyteller, and made sure we navigated the cave safely and respectfully. Lunch was great too!

I went in expecting a hike in a cave with a little bit of wading through water. I came out having experienced something truly unforgettable. The ATM Cave is unlike anything else. We were picked up at our resort at 8:30 AM. The bus made a stop in San Ignacio to check in with the tour operator, then swung by a local market so anyone who wanted snacks or extra supplies could grab them. From there it was on to the cave. When you arrive at the parking lot, you can change into your cave gear if needed. Everything stays on the bus, you carry only your water bottle and snack. From the parking lot, you hike to the cave entrance, crossing the river several times along the way. Just before entering, there’s a snack break and a bathroom stop. You leave your water bottle here. Then you go in. And wow, do you go in. Wading, swimming, crawling, and climbing through some tight spaces. The cave opens up into chambers filled with ancient Maya artifacts and skeletal remains that have been there for centuries. The fact that it’s all just… there… is mind-blowing. The guide, ours was memorable for a different reason. He delivered every piece of history in full movie trailer announcer mode. Dramatic pauses and all. It was unintentionally hilarious, but it added to our experience. After the cave, you hike back to the parking lot and sit down to a traditional lunch of chicken stew with rice and beans. Simple, hearty, and exactly what you need after a full morning of cave exploration. Then it’s back on the bus and a drop-off at your resort around 4 PM. Tips: You won’t need insect repellant or SPF inside the cave, but bring some for the parking lot. You’ll be hanging out there for lunch and could use it. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting soaked. If you’re headed to San Ignacio, do not skip this. It was the highlight of our entire trip.

What an amazing experience! Our tour with MayaWalk was great and specifically our tour guide Hugh was outstanding! We loved all parts of this tour. We recommend Keen shoes worn with hiking socks. It was just the right amount of adventure to please everyone- whether you think you are Indiana Jones or you're a middle aged mom who is more indoorsy. You'll hike through the jungle (mostly flat - easy) cross a couple streams (refreshing!) and then swim into the cave (amazing!) The cave itself has a variety of landscapes from big cavernous rooms to winding passageways. Never did I feel claustrophobic. You'll be in and out of the water the whole way - sometimes swimming, sometimes walking ankle deep and sometimes on dry land. There was one point where you had to climb up onto a rock that could feel a little tricky, but I'm more on the Indiana Jones end of the spectrum so, no big deal. Also, near the farthest end of the tour you must walk in socks so I personally recommend good hiking socks with a little padding on the bottom. My "Darn Tough" socks were perfect (get at REI). Afterwards you'll be served a typical Belizean meal. We inhaled it as it was delicious! Note: bring a little snack, like a granola bar, to eat either right before entering the cave or just after exiting. Also, there are toilets just before entering the cave if you have the need. If you're going to Belize, don't miss this opportunity! And, ask for HUGH. He was the best!

We went with Maya Tours to the ATM cave. We had Hugh. He was an amazing tour guide. Lunch was delicious. It is a mile walk in both directions to the cave while crossing 3 rivers (waist deep). Once you are at the cave it is a short swim followed by spelunking for about a mile, there is some more swimming as well as climbing involved. You are given a headlight, helmet and life jacket and are not allowed to bring cameras or cell phones. You have to wear closed toed water shoes (Keens worked for us) with socks underneath. Hugh had so much knowledge and was so informative. There was a couple in our group that struggled with swimming and some of the minor climbing and Hugh was incredibly patient and ensured everyone felt safe. I couldn't have asked for a better tour guide.

One of the most amazing things I have ever experienced We had an air conditioned transfer in a comfortable van with bol driving us to and from the site. He watched the bus with our belongings the entire time we were on our tour Our tour guides emil and hugh were incredible. Between their knowledge of the history to their consideration of how we wanted to enjoy the experience they were exceptional. They took into consideration any fears or medical conditions of the group to curate the tour route carefully Sadia created an unbelievable home cooked meal with chicken rice and other sides, with a huge portion. Vegetarian was available as well Truly cannot explain this experience it’s a must
