Explore this lush area surrounded by beautiful jungles, and the cave entrance is traversed by swimming across a crystal clear spring fed pool. Atm Cave Belize (actun Tunichil Muknal)
Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place. This is the final resting place of “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.
Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”. We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides. We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio. Difficulty level: Moderate (involved some easy swimming and life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, who will also be escorted by our highly trained guide).

Absolutely amazing must do excursion if in Belize. Our guide Hugh went the extra mile to make sure we had the best experience that day. His knowledge and passion for sharing were what truly set it apart. We were one of the first groups in and the last group out because of the extra time and effort he put in to making the experience special, actively seek him out if you do this tour with Maya Walk. 10 of 10. Experience this cave before they close it for good!

Absolutely a fantastic day for our entire family! Our guide, Juan Carlos, was an incredibly knowledgeable and provocative tour guide who provided so much more than the garden variety tour of an amazing site. He expanded our collective thoughts beyond the stunning physical beauty of the cave to incorporate the spiritual, cultural and psychological importance of this cave system to the Mayan people and their civilization. We were a family of four with two adult daughters and were joined by a young couple to make a group of six. With Juan Carlos’s expert leadership, we explored every tiny crevice of the cave system. Highlights included: extremely tight passageways (in one case, you had to orient your head a certain way to pass thru the opening!), navigating two sections in chest deep water thru lights off, absolutely pitch-black darkness (eyes open or shut made no difference), climbing up & down rock walls up to 15’ high amid constant running water to make it more than 800m into the cave to the most sacred tomb site. The physical beauty of the stalactites, stalagmites and rock formations was like nothing I’ve ever seen. However, the skeletal remains and countless artifacts totally animated the cave tour and reinforced the cultural importance of ATM. We were so fortunate to have perhaps the most knowledgeable, experienced (>25 yrs) and passionate guide to bring to life this “tour of the underworld”. We will be talking about this adventure for many years to come. To top it off, we were treated to an excellent picnic lunch hosted by Britney and expertly chauffeured by Willem across the butt massaging limestone trails to get to/ from the site. Clearly a “must” for any visit to Belize!

Great day! Learned a lot about the Mayans. Wear good shoes. They mean it when they say no open toe/sandals. Be prepared to test your agility. Amazing adventure.

Our ATM Cave tour and picnic with MayaWalk was absolutely incredible. Alex, Wilbur, and Jessica were fun, kind, knowledgeable, and amazing from start to finish. They made the entire day feel safe, exciting, meaningful, and unforgettable. After taking other tours, I can honestly say this was by far the best guided tour experience of my life. The adventure was definitely difficult at times, but in the best way. It was challenging, fulfilling, and so worth it. What stood out most was the care this team put into every part of the day. They were patient, encouraging, and clearly passionate about the history, culture, and sacredness of the ATM Cave. The picnic was such a thoughtful and delicious part of the experience too. I would recommend MayaWalk again and again. This team set the bar extremely high.

This was an amazing tour from the beginning to the end. It is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours long and it’s not for the fainted heart. Emil was our guide, and he was very professional. He was very well-versed in all aspects of knowledge about this tour and the ancestral history of Maya culture.

Highly recommend this tour! My guide Christian was super knowledgeable and kind. I recently had a knee surgery and he helped me all through out the tour. Honestly, I don’t think I would have made it out if it wasn’t for him. The cave and hike was incredible. It was an experience of a lifetime! Also the driver Marvin was so friendly and had a lot of good info he shared on Belize and the culture!

Top 10 experience in your life. If you are fit, comfortable in the water and in tight spaces, this is unlike anything you have ever seen or done. Alex our guide was fantastic. Brittany cooks up a great chicken and rice lunch. Mayawalk tours was the first company to do tours in the area and they are clearly the best. Best equipment, guides, bus, lunch, etc. highly recommend.
