Akagera National Park
You will arrive at Akagera National Park around 11:00 AM, where you will receive a 30-minute briefing from the park warden while your driver-guide completes the check-in process. Once ready, you will embark on an exciting exploration of the park’s southern region. This part of Akagera offers an unforgettable safari experience, with breathtaking savannah landscapes teeming with wildlife. Expect to encounter elephants, zebras, buffaloes, and various antelope species, along with playful vervet monkeys. The nearby Lake Ihema provides an opportunity for a thrilling boat safari, where you can observe hippos, crocodiles, and an array of bird species, including the rare and majestic shoebill stork.
On your way to Akagera National Park, make a refreshing stop at the Imigongo Art Center, a perfect spot to enjoy a cup of Rwandan coffee while immersing yourself in the country’s rich artistic heritage. Famous for its unique geometric cow dung paintings, the center showcases traditional Imigongo art, handcrafted by local artisans. As you sip your coffee, take in the vibrant artwork, explore the small gallery, and even purchase a piece as a souvenir. A full-day Akagera safari from north to south offers an incredible journey through the park’s diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife. After spending the first day exploring the southern region, day two focuses on the northern part, known for its vast open plains and higher concentrations of game. As you venture north, expect to encounter large herds of buffalo, zebras, and antelopes, along with elephants and the occasional black rhino. This region is also prime lion and leopard territory, offering thrilling predator sightings. Birdwatchers will be captivated by the rich avian life, including eagles, vultures, and the striking saddle-billed stork. The northern sector’s rolling hills and savannah create a classic African safari experience, distinct from the wetlands and woodlands of the south.
