  • Consider Skipping the Guided Tour: Explore Isla Mujeres Independently Instead

I booked an all-inclusive catamaran excursion from Cancun to Isla Mujeres, which promised two hours at Playa Centro (the downtown beach), a buffet lunch, and snorkeling if weather allowed. To help others decide whether this tour is worth it, here's a balanced breakdown of the positives and negatives based on my experience. PROS: 1. The staff were warm, welcoming, and energetic. Maria, in particular, did a great job keeping everyone in good spirits despite the tour's issues. The crew were excellent hosts, continuously serving drinks and maintaining a fun, lively atmosphere. 2. Pickup and transfer to the ferry pier (and return) were punctual and well-organized. Unfortunately, that's about where the positives end. The drawbacks were significant and overshadowed the day. CONS: 1. Our noon departure turned into boarding around 12:45 PM and sailing closer to 1:00 PM. 2. The crossing, which usually takes 30-40 minutes on a standard ferry, stretched to nearly 1 hour and 45 minutes on one of the smallest and slowest catamarans I've experienced. It wasn't due to rough seas—other faster boats passed us easily. It simply felt like an underpowered vessel that couldn't make better time. 3. Comfort on board was poor. The bow area was packed with at least 20 people, leading to sore backsides after the long ride. If you enjoy bouncing on the waves under direct sun with the hard bow surface supporting your derriere, it might appeal, but several passengers (including families) suffered from motion sickness and ended up at the stern. 4. We reached the beach club for lunch around 2:45 PM, with buffet access at 3:00 PM, but had to return to the boat by 4:20 PM. The club was chaotic—crowds scrambling for seats, food running low, and general frustration. While not entirely the tour's fault, the initial delay created a domino effect. 5. The boat then headed to downtown Isla Mujeres around 4:50 PM, disembarked at 5:25 PM. We were then told to be back at 6:30 PM. This left us with only about one hour of free time before heading back. Most visitors come for Playa Norte (widely regarded as one of the world's top beaches, known for its stunning turquoise waters and white sand). 6. Due to the delays and late-afternoon timing, we barely had time to enjoy the beach or explore downtown—let alone rent a golf cart. At 5:30 PM, the light made the water appear grayish rather than vibrant turquoise, and the sand looked less impressive. By comparison, beaches like those at Punta Cancun or Forum felt more appealing that day. 7. We rushed back to depart around 6:35 PM. Some families opted for the faster, more comfortable public ferry (about 30 minutes with proper seating) instead of returning on the catamaran. 8. Snorkeling was skipped entirely—not due to weather, but because the accumulated delays left no time. The staff apologized, but it didn't compensate for the missing activity. Overall, the prolonged sailing time (nearly 1 hour 45 minutes each way) dominated the day and made the "catamaran" label feel misleading compared to faster, more comfortable ones elsewhere. We left at 1:00 PM and returned around 8:00 PM, with most of the seven hours spent boating, only about one hour at the downtown beach, and roughly 1 hour 45 minutes at the beach club for lunch. In my view, it wasn't great value. I'd recommend the regular ferry for a quicker trip, then independently renting golf carts, arranging meals, and enjoying more flexible time on the island—it's cheaper and offers far more freedom. If you truly want to experience the stunning turquoise hues of Playa Norte, make sure to visit in the early morning or midday/early afternoon. By around 6 PM, you'll mostly catch a sunset over waters that appear more gray than blue.

Loud music and lots of booze! If that’s all you care about this activity is for you. The highlights as listed are the snorkeling and being in the ocean. Neither happened. Second rate buffet was the first stop and shopping in a town was the second. No snorkeling as the winds wouldn’t allow it. Maybe have a contingency? Circle the island and stopping to swim off the boat? These folks have no critical thinking ability. Worst of all we weren’t told there would be no swimming until after we set sail!!! If we knew beforehand we’d cancel or reschedule. Joke of a company. AVOID!!! Ironically we’re literally minutes from docking and they decide to stop and have a sunset swim???? Ok. So we can swim now but not during the day??

The boarding process was a disaster. No one explained much of anything to the clients who had been given a ticket and separate colored arm bands. No one explained when boarding would begin. The water was rough which understandably made it difficult for the Catamarans and other vessels to dock and then board passengers. No updates were provided to the over 100 passengers jamming the pier waiting at the gate area. Almost 90 minutes later someone starting calling out our vessels name and leading us to board. It doesn’t appear that the color arm bands mattered since there were 4 different colors on our Cat. Shortly after departing they announced no snorkeling because of weather. Again understandable but disappointing. Stopped at Beach Club. By the time we got off the boat and finished the buffet, we had 5 minutes to “enjoy” the club as we were lead to belief we would do instead of snorkeling. Next we were hustled to the main pier where we were given 1 hour to tour the island. Basically they tried to force us to choose between a $125 rental of a golf cart for an hour or their guided tour. We and several other families choose to explore on our own. Clearly there is a relationship between the tour company and certain vendors which is mutually beneficial. On the way back to the pier there was some kind of effort to force us to show our tickets again and “settled up” our failure to join their “tour” that we never agreed to. i declined. we have done Cat tours at many islands and Costa Rico. Other operators have always done a great job even with adverse weather. Felt like this group was just shoving as many passengers on to any available vessel to make sure they got their money. Adversity typically reveal character and values. This group failed to communicate changing conditions and utter failed to make efforts to make up for the delays and lack of snorkeling. There was not a single acknowledgment that customers were not gettting what they paid for. Avoid at all costs.

Departed an 1:40 after adjusted departure; 3:40 after our originally scheduled tour. Too many people scheduled on the boat, not enough seats, resting places for everyone. All times on island were shorter than posted. Plenty of drinks on boat that were good.

I cannot tell you all the things that went wrong with this tour. It started when we got off the shuttle that picked us up from the hotel and dropped us off at the dock. We were ushered to the waiting area with no instructions or direction on what to do and left waiting for over 2 hours before we were loaded onto a boat. We were brought to the first stop and given about 45 minutes to eat at a buffet. There was not enough food. The water smelled of raw sewage and was not fit to swim in. We were loaded back onto the boat and at that point we were informed that we would not be snorkeling and that there would be no water activities. We were brought to the island. They said we would have 2 hours but by the time we unloaded we had one hour and 15 minutes. The beach area was ridiculous and we wandered around in tourist hell until we were loaded back on the boat at 6:00 p.m. sharp; we departed and it took over an hour and 20 minutes to get back to Cancun. This was basically a booze cruise as the poor crew kept pushing drinks to keep passengers under control. Nothing was communicated throughout the entire trip, we had to keep asking what was going on_ this was not what had been provided to us as the itinerary. The entire purpose of this trip was to go snorkeling. In no way were we informed that snorkeling had been canceled. I would not have come on this tour if snorkeling was not going to happen. This was an entire waste of our day. I feel like we were completely scammed. In the future do not bother with this tour. Take the ferry to the island and do some research on snorkeling companies on the island. That's what I should have done.

This is not a snorkelling day. We had 15 minutes of snorkelling with no tubes. My mum who is 66 got told she wasn’t allowed to snorkel without accepting her own liability. The food was really not great, my daughter was puking for 24 hours after having the soup. On the boat they allowed us to have some free time and told my mum to move off the nets as she did they opened a hatch which she then fell down and left her with a bad neck, back and a huge bruise. Lots of guests ran to assist her but the crew did not. The island was in the harbour and was not sold adequately. The drinks were flowing and the vibes were good. I dislike leaving bad reviews but their lack of empathy shown to my mum after they had caused this really shocked me. Personally they should have offered her money back but not even a sorry. It was a lovely day and my children loved it. When having lunch some people got to have an upgraded lunch, which I would have been happy to pay for a fee.

  • Worst experience ever bad communication

This was by far the worst tour experience I’ve ever had. I texted Omar in the morning letting him know we were up and ready for the 7–7:15 pick-up, and we were waiting outside the Airbnb. I figured maybe they were running late, but I never got a single call. When I called Omar, he didn’t answer, and then he messaged me right after asking if we were with the driver. Then he casually says the driver had left us and was “outside calling.” Absolute lie — we never got a call from either Omar or the driver. This was supposed to be a tour for my birthday. They clearly didn’t care. They didn’t try to fix anything. Then Omar said we could find our own driver to meet at Carmen de Playa at 8:10 — when it was already 7:45. From Tulum, that was completely impossible. They ruined my birthday. The communication from this company is nonexistent. They are careless, unprofessional, and clearly don’t value their customers. I booked thinking it was one of the top tours in the area, but I was so wrong. Do not book with this company — it’s a scammy, terrible business.

The experience itself was great- the crew was friendly, and we enjoyed our time on the catamaran. We couldn’t snorkel because the water was too choppy that day, but the tour operator notified no one of this change in plans. Instead, only when we boarded we were told that snorkeling was not going to happen, and offered instead to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres (added charge) so we had something fun to do with the extra free time we had in town. The company had similar organization issues at boarding (the crazy long lines to give you tickets and pay the tax, which other operators have eliminated entirely). Similar problems arose when we got back. The catamaran floated aimlessly in front of the dock for about 30 minutes, instead of pulling in and letting folks off quickly. This meant we had to rush to our transport van without changing or stopping for the bathroom… all stuff that could have been managed better, and added some annoyances into an otherwise fun trip.
