Who were the Jews who began settling in the Netherlands around 1600? What do Jews celebrate on Pesach? And why do Jews wear a kippah? Come and find out at the Jewish Museum. Through personal stories, unique objects and art you’ll find out everything you ever wanted to know about Jewish religion, history and culture. You’ll learn about Jewish customs, rituals and festivals and you’ll see how Jews keep those traditions alive today. Discover Jewish life then and now and everything in between.
Portugese Synagoge
In the heart of the old Jewish neighbourhood stands the Portuguese Synagogue. The biggest synagogue in the world when it was built in the 17th century. Jews still worship here to this day, but whenever this wonderful building isn’t being used for services it’s open for you to visit. Everyone is welcome. Whether you’re Jewish or not. A visit to the Portuguese Synagogue is a breathtaking experience. Everything has been kept just as it was in the 17th century. Instead of electric lights, the synagogue is lit by hundreds of candles.

We had the guide Peter and the tour was really great. He had a huge folder of photos and documents with him and gave us a good insight into the story of Anne Frank's family.

This was a great walking tour of the Jewish area and sites. -Our guide was great, he was friendly and interactive, always asking us questions. Showed us pictures from a binder. spoke loud and clearly and explained everything well. At the meeting point he had a orange umbrella, easy to find. -The tour started at the jewish museum, we didnt go in, just met outside, then walked around the area to various buildings and streets, and statues, and eveutually made our way to the anne frank house/annex on the other side of downtown Amsterdam. -Lots of good sites, we didnt enter anything, just walking tour, but they did email about the included entrance to museums for after tour. Overall a great tour and i learned alot about the jewish area of amsterdam.
