Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically, with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Mayan artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place. You get beat up, scratches, bruises, soreness everywhere. Worth it=To me, yes! I overcame some major fears, and the history was simply there for a bonus! If you're in decent condition, do it!

  • Best tour I've taken in 10+ years.

Fantastic experience with Elvin and Pedro. We spent all day with UpClose Belize (7am hotel pickup; 5pm airport dropoff). This tour is not for the faint of heart. 90 minutes of hiking in the heat then 2 hours in the cave. The cave is physically demanding as well. Pedro got our group through it with skill. Elvin was great in making sure we got to our flight in time and even confirmed the time with Maya Air for us. Probably the best tour I've taken in 10 years.

AWESOME!!!! Everything from our driver, tour guide, cave experience and lunch was outstanding! Our guide, Pedro, was very thorough, he took his time sharing his knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area and so much information about the Mayan world. Highly recommend this tour, I've never done anything like it and it is by the BEST tour I've ever experienced!

The tour itself was amazing and definitely would recommend people do it. Viator’s organization was really poor, so I would suggest using a different company. We had booked months in advance. Several days before the tour I was informed by email and over the app of the pic up time and location. The app and email noted different times and locations for pick up. The day before the tour I was asked to change the date or pay an extra $50 USD cash. Because we had no other option to switch days, we paid the tourist tax on our trip. I don’t mind paying money for an experience, I do mind feeling like I am being extorted.

  • ATM caves is a must in Belize.

Bring swimwear and socks, (and ideally water shoes). The experience involves working through a cave system used by the mayans for human sacrifices.

  • You MUST do this cave trip

What a trip! Never done, or seen anything like it. Cameras aren't allowed, so no pics. Well organised, extremely informative, but physically quite demanding (OK for a couple of fit 60 somethings). Our guide Alex and driver Karim were so knowledgeable.

Our guide Fransisco was amazing. He was informative and insightful. He explained everything in a way that conveyed feeling and knowledge. I highly recommend him. For him, it wasn't just another trip, he wanted to share his knowledge, and you could feel his connection with the sight. Grigno the driver from the water taxi to the excursion and back and attentive and got us unto the last ferry. He also gave us insight into the local area and delighted us.

  • An excursion unlike any other.

This tour was highly organized from pick up to drop off, even with the minor hiccup of our original guide being sick. We joined with another guide who was obviously passionate about the history of the caves (Mr Maya) and he showed us things I think other guides overlooked. The cave experience was unlike anything we’ve ever done, and were an active family. The kids loved scrambling over rocks and swimming through the passages, and the seeing all the artifacts and skeletons was a bit of history mixed in with the adventure. I will say that while it’s “suggested” you have socks it really should be mandatory. You walk far longer than I expected to without your shoes, so socks are nice to have. At the end of our tour our driver Gringo took us around Belize City just so we could have a chance to see it, which was a really nice addition.

  • Highly recommended amazing cave adventure

Visiting the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave in Belize, which means “Cave of the Stone Sepulcher,” is probably one of the coolest adventures I’ve done throughout my travels across the globe. After heavy rains and short closure of the cave, I was lucky to explore Xibalba, the gateway to the Mayan underworld. The cave is believed to be a site for human sacrifice with skeletons (some were under 18 yo) and pots strewn throughout, melded, and fused with the cave undisturbed for thousands of years. The trip was not for the faint of heart - 3 river crossings across a jungle and a 3-hour hike into the darkness neck deep in water, free climbing up rocks, and forcing myself (and my head) through extremely tight spaces multiple times just so I can keep hiking. On the way in, I was greeted by 2 boa constrictors, and on the way out, a giant wolf spider hanging out by the cave wall! My tour guide, Francisco, aka "Panchito", was amazing and knowledgeable about the site. Our group was small and we didn't have a lot of questions (because Francisco gave us a lot of information). Francisco was very interested in the history and gave us different theories as to why the skeletons and pots were inside the cave. He was very passionate about guiding us through the cave and he was very detailed about all the safety precautions we needed to know prior to, during, and after the hike. I didn't have any injuries - no scrapes or bruises - just some bug bites while hiking through the forest. The lunch was also delicious! Phones and cameras are not allowed inside, and I highly recommend wearing water shoes AND socks (for when you walk barefoot in a certain section of the cave). Only a tiny portion of the cave is open to the public.

My wife said let's go caving while on vacation. Once the shock wore off and she explained what we were going to get into I was still apprehensive. Don't get me wrong I like adventure but more the above ground type. And yes I was wrong and it was amazing. When will I learn ! We went with [email protected] Basilio Mes He was amazing , knowledgeable and entertaining Overall it was better than I could have imagined and I gave him to thank.
