Thanks to the relatively low level of human intervention, Romania has become home to the largest brown bear population in Europe. Here, in the heart of the Carpathian mountains, you have the chance to observe these majestic animals in their natural habitat, find out interesting facts about the bear life in the wilderness and capture unique moments with your camera.

Join us for a short bear-watching adventure trip in the forests near Brașov, together with a specialized forest ranger that will answer all your questions.

What makes the tour with us different is that we will teach you about bears life, winter habits, diet and mating. We strongly believe this is a great opportunity to learn, apart from taking amazing pictures.

Bears have a very sensitive smell so please don’t bring any kind of food or snacks. Also, please don’t use perfume or other scents.

Dress adequately. Wear sturdy shoes and try to avoid brights colors.

During the activity don’t use flash or any other lights, as these might scare the animals. Please turn off your camera’s focus assist light.

Bears are dangerous and unpredictable wild animals. Please don’t try to feed them or act like they are pets. In case you encounter one avoid eye contact, don’t try to run or climb into trees and listen to the forest ranger’s advice.

This activity takes place in the wild, in an uncontrolled environment. Therefore, we can't guarantee that you will see bears. A refund is not possible in case no bears show up at the bear-watching site.

The minimum age to participate in this tour is 7 years.

What To Expect

Piatra Craiului National Park Visitor Center

In the afternoon, we will pick you up from your accommodation in Brasov. We pass through Zarnesti and after another 25 minutes drive, we will arrive at a junction where we turn right. Then the fun part starts! We will drive for about 30 minutes deep in the forest, offroad and unpaved road, to where the bears roam free. Quietly, we will get out of the car and walk into a safe bear hide. The hide is built on wooden pillars and is situated at approximately 3 meters above the ground, to allow a better perspective of the area. Once the bears arrive, we need to keep silent not to scare them off. We can take photos or videos but turn our flashes off. After about 2 hours, we will get back to the car, quietly, and drive back to Brasov, where we will drop you off at your accommodation. *This tour requires a minimum of 2 attendees. If you are travelling alone, contact us before to see if you can join an already formed group.

If you do one thing whilst in Brasov - do this! Knowledgeable guide who is actually working in bear and beaver conservation, in a brilliant hide. It is a truely memorable experience.

Excellent tour We went with Mr Radu directly from our hotel - as a native of Braşov he was both friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the area - taking us to an extra special spot for him to see a spectacular view of the mountains! We saw lots of brown bears which was an experience to remember and I would definitely recommend the tour and Mr Radu to anyone looking for this type of adventure! Thank you!

Wonderful experience of seeing bears in their natural habitat. Guides were very friendly and made this trip very relaxing and pleasant. We were lucky enough to get 5 separate sightings and what a mesmerising sight these huge powerful creatures were. Thoroughly recommend

Amazing trip, incredible setting with fantastic views. We knew there was no guarantee of seeing any bears but over the two days we saw 8 different bears in total and at varying times they spent a long while outside the cabin. It was a quite magical experience. Our guide, Alex, was also exceptional. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the bears, all other wildlife and the history of the area and Romania itself. Given the fairly basic facilities in the cabin the food was great and the bed was very comfortable. One of the best trips we have done and couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Tudor was a really good guide. Answered all questions relating to bears and their habitat. He is also a forest hike guide so had a lot of knowledge. Saw around 5 brown bears including alpha bear Tyson. They were there for a while too enough to take picture and videos and have time to see time properly. Everything was organised well and went very smoothly. There is a 8 km drive with the first ranger where we saw beautiful Romanian horses, sheep and Shepard dogs as well. Very beautiful terrain and good guide!

This was an exclusive trip where our ranger took my husband and I on a 10 minute drive into the forest to a hide. We observed a number of bears, it is hard to say how many, probably around 10, at close range. Our viewing time lasted for 1 hour. After the trip we were given, as part of our package, complimentary sundowner drinks, which we chose to drink outside next to the lake at this beautiful location. The communications between the agent and I were exceptional. All my questions were answered accurately and she even provided me with a great 4 day itinerary for our roadtrip from Bucharest. I accidentally made the payment twice and I was refunded the excess without any fuss. Together with the trail to Saint Anna's Lake in the morning which was part of the itinerary recommendation, this was the best day of my holiday. I can't thank you enough.

What a great day,, my guide was very knowledgeable, told me all that I need to know about bears on the way to hide, even had conversation about other wildlife as well.. if you enjoy nature I highly advise this trip, seen 6 bears in all!! Brilliant 👍👍

We had a very nice and well-organized tour with a very friendly guide who was happy to answer all of our questions. You could tell that the animals were close to his heart. In the almost two hours we spent in the hut, we saw bears and foxes almost the whole time. There were even 8 bears there at one time. We were very lucky and would definitely recommend the tour. Booking was also very straightforward and possible spontaneously.
