Berat Castle
Perched majestically on a rocky hill, the Berat Castle is a citadel with origins in the 4th century BCE. Unlike many historic fortresses, it remains inhabited, with residents living in homes that date back centuries. Inside the castle walls, you can find Byzantine churches and the ruins of mosques.

5.00My wife and I toured Berat with Ilir. Both the fortress and our guide highlighted the day. The fortress tells the history of Albania in a nutshell, reflecting the multiple rulers, the role of religion and the personality of the people that results. Ilir also shines. Like all memorable guides, he comes across as affable, skillful, knowledgeable and passionate both about the topic and about guiding. He really brought to life the icons of Onufri Museum which even after years of viewing them, I had never truly appreciated. Ilir similarly fanned my enthusiasm for relics such as the “Purple Bible” as well as the lively history of Albania. Ilir also provides commentary about Albanian life and culture on a comfortable drive from Tiranë. An enjoyable day and highly recommended. As an added plus, Ilir takes beautiful pictures.

5.00Make sure to do this tour - Berat is a fascinating UNESCO site. Ilir (tour guide) is one of the best I’ve come across. Extremely knowledgeable, patient, and made the overall experience a lot of fun!

5.00Our guide Ilir was great, full of information, very friendly and took lots of great photos for us. He spoke with real passion about the frescoes at Berat, which was a particular highlight. The car was very comfortable and the air con very effective which is crucial in the summer heat

5.00We took a tour to Berat with our guide Ilir. Unfortunately for Ilir the others who had scheduled the tour cancelled so we were the only two on the trip. He arrived at the designated time to pick us up at our hotel and introduced himself. The trip to Berat was nice as Ilir did a great job providing us with insights to the history of and changes that Albania has gone through over the centuries. Halfway to Berat we had a stop for coffee and were given a chance to visit with Ilir to get to know about him. The visit to Berat Castle was great with us learning the history. Ilir is extremely knowledgeable about the iconography in the museum allowing us to appreciate it more than if we had visited it without a guide. He took several pictures of us during the tour which will allow us to look back at the memories when we return home.
