Nestled in the Uzbek desert, Khiva boasts a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with stunning examples of Islamic architecture, bustling bazaars, and centuries-old madrasas and minarets. Your journey begins at the majestic walls of the UNESCO-listed Itchan Kala, the old town, where every step reveals a new story etched in the intricate tile work of buildings like the Kalta Minor and the Mohammed Amin Khan Madrasa. Wander through bustling squares where merchants still trade as they have for centuries, and soak in the vibrant colors of local crafts and textiles.

Itchan Kala

Explore Ichan Qal’a, Khiva’s iconic UNESCO-listed fortress city, home to beautifully preserved monuments and historic streets.

Citadel Kunya-ark

Kunya-Ark «old castle» was built in the end of 17th century in 1686-1688 by Anushakhan’s son Arangakhan. The total size of the fortress is 130х93 metre. The fortress included a hall for official reception, khan’s office, mosques, mint, as well as many other outbuildings. Today, there are only a few buildings of Kunya-Ark fortress: kurinishhona (room for reception of people); Ak-Sheikh Bobo’s cell; the eastern gate with room for guarding; summer and winter mosques and harem. Ak-Sheikh Bobo’s cell was dwelling of Ak-Sheikh Bobo. Later it served as observation tower and a warehouse where gunpowder was stored. Kurinishhona building was built in the years 1686-1688 by Arang Khan. But in the middle of the XVIII century, during the invasion of Iranians it was destroyed. In 1804-1806 the building was erected by Eltazur-khan.

    Excellent walking tour of Khiva. Our guide Nilufar showed us all the sights of the city as well as some hidden gems. A few times we were the only people at a beautiful location. Nilufar had great stories to tell about the city and its history. I definitely recommend this tour.

    The guide (Maya) was great. Lots of information and very patient every time we wanted to stop and shop during the tour. They also planned our pick up and dropoff to airport and helped us to make dinner reservations. Definitely recommend doing khiva with a guide, the old city is a labyrinth of alleys and doorways.
