Paro Taktsang
Start your day with an early breakfast and prepare for an unforgettable hike to Bhutan’s iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang). Perched at 3,000 meters on a cliffside, the monastery is reached via a scenic three-hour trek through pine forests draped in prayer flags. A teahouse along the trail offers the first glimpse of the monastery and a chance to rest and enjoy the views. Built in 1684 A.D., Tiger’s Nest is believed to be where Guru Padmasambhava meditated after flying there on a tigress. Its location, spiritual significance, and dramatic architecture make it a highlight of any trip to Bhutan. After the hike, visit Dungtse Lhakhang, a unique 15th-century temple shaped like a chorten. It houses rare murals and sacred relics that offer insight into Bhutanese Buddhist traditions. Return to your hotel in Paro to relax and reflect on this spiritually enriching and awe-inspiring day. Rinpung Dzong
Rinpung Dzong, or the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels,” is a prominent landmark in Paro, built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Overlooking the Paro River, it functions as both a religious and administrative center and features classic Bhutanese architecture, including whitewashed walls and intricate woodwork. It houses sacred relics and hosts the famous Paro Tsechu, known for its masked dances and rituals. Just above the dzong is the National Museum of Bhutan, located in Ta Dzong, a former watchtower built in 1649. Converted in 1968, it displays Bhutanese artifacts such as thangkas, relics, and traditional items reflecting the country’s cultural history. A short drive from Paro takes you to Dra Karpo, the “Split Rock,” a revered spiritual site where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated. It offers stunning views of the valley and is a tranquil place for reflection, drawing pilgrims and visitors alike.
