Sam Nail Ranch
In 1916, Sam Nail built a two-room house here, and together with his wife Nena, raised livestock, planted pecan, walnut, and fig trees, and raised a family. The trail from the road is really easy, about a half-mile round trip, and it takes you to what’s left of these orchards, and of the house.
Sotol Vista
This incredible view just off the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive takes in a 360-degree view of much of the western half of the park, including Santa Elena Canyon out in the distance.

Thankfully I purchased this audio tour before going to the park. The narrator had a pleasant voice, told us places he felt we should see and gave a great history lesson on the park and the indigenous people who lived there. If the stops were farther apart music was on and had some really good artists playing. It was well worth the money!

This was a great tour! I loved that I could start and stop the tour anywhere in the park without having to follow a set itinerary. Although this was not my first visit to Big Bend, I learned so much more about the park from this tour. It was easy to set up and use, and the insight provided enhanced our experience in the park. I will definitely be purchasing more Shaka Guides!

I would give this 10 stars if I could! What a wonderful way to experience a national park! It was like having a park ranger in the vehicle with us all day. I cannot recommend Shaka Guides Big Bend National Park Self Driving tour enough. It was fabulous!

Nervous about connectivity issues, getting it “started”, etc. … worked like a charm! Of course I had loaded the apps, Viator, etc. Stated and stopped and “restarted” just fine!

My husband and I really enjoyed the Big Bend audio tour. The narration, including history, interesting stories and music, kept us entertained while educating us about things we would not have known otherwise. The casual, friendly tone of the narrator was very easy to listen to. We highly recommend this audio tour.
