Step back more than 500 years and explore the rich — and often overlooked — history of African ancestry in Panama. This walking journey unfolds through two defining chapters: the colonial era, marked by the harsh realities of slavery and powerful acts of resistance, and the West Indian migrations — a period of labor, resilience, and cultural legacy that helped shape Panama’s identity.
• Our walk begins in Casco Antiguo, moving beyond the former walls that once divided the elite from the working-class community of Santa Ana.
• We continue along Central Avenue, a vibrant area filled with stories and local life.
• Then we visit the Afro-Antillean Museum to explore the lives and contributions of West Indian migrants who helped build the nation.
Optional: Lunch at San Felipe Neri Market for local comfort food and a refreshing natural juice. Book the Walking Experience + Lunch option.
This experience invites you to discover the shadows and lights that shape Afro-Panamanian heritage.

We absolutely loved this tour! Meli is so knowledgeable, passionate, and kind. She answered all of our questions confidently and showed us areas that we would have never explored on our own. She provided bottles of water which was very nice as it was a hot and humid day. She was also very attentive to the needs of all on the tour. She slowed the pace for slower walkers, made sure we all headed off in the right direction after the tour, and even helped me find and negotiate a fair price for an item I’d been looking for at the market we walked through. This tour was like an interactive history lesson and we enjoyed it very much. I highly recommend this tour!

I have been living in Panama City for over 5yrs as a Black expat, and this is by far one of the best cultural tours I have experienced. Meli’s depth of knowledge and her strong desire to educate her tour guests about Afro-panamanian culture kept me engaged from start to finish. She went above and beyond by also introducing us to local pastries, as well as traditional dance that made her tour even more memorable. If you are ever in Panama City, this tour is a must do.

Outstanding experience with our tour guide Meli. She is extremely knowledgeable about the Afro Panamanian/Carribean experience in Panama. She really connects the dots regarding a lot of history that has been hidden or distorted throughout the Americas. I give her 5 stars.

Be prepared for a very informative tour. Insight into the less seen and heard side of Panama. Mili was very professional in her presentation . She is very proud of her country and her heritage, it showed in her tour. Would recommend this be one of your activities in Casco Viejo.

Mel’s tour is a captivating blend of historical facts and cultural storytelling. The tour starts in Casco Viejo where she brings to life the African origins in Panama with passion and clarity. A highlight was our stop at Santa Ana park, where we enjoyed a delicious plantain tart which a sweet reminder of how the Caribbean has influenced Panamanian cuisine. The tour also shed light on the West Indian migration during the Panama Railroad construction (1850–1855), and the Afro-Antillean Museum provided a deeper understanding of the contributions that these communities helped in shaping modern Panama. What makes this tour truly special is Mel herself. Her warmth, love for her country, and ability to connect the history with lived experience make this more than just a tour ..it’s a heartfelt journey delivered with love. Great value for money and highly recommended!

My husband and I recently had a stopover in Panama City—our first time visiting the country—and we were eager to learn about the African influence in Panama. As soon as we arrived, I started looking for a tour, and I’m so glad I found the Afro-Panamanian walking tour. Meli, our guide was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and incredibly inclusive, ensuring that everyone felt comfortable, especially those of us who walked a bit slower. Not only that, but she also engaged us in the learning experience through the day, which I appreciated as those opportunities helped the group blend nicely. The walking terrain was fairly flat, making it accessible for most. I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a hat or sunbrella for shade. The tour lasted about three hours, with plenty of opportunities to take a breather at various spots along the way. She shared a wealth of information about music, culture, and food, immersing us in the vibrant history of Panama. A highlight for me was walking down Central Avenue, where we learned about the various indigenous and ethnic groups that contributed to Panama’s development, particularly during the construction of the Panama Canal. The guide provided intriguing insights into America’s influence on Panama, enriching out understanding of the nation’s complex history. The last stop at the Afro-Antillan museum was particularly informative, as she brought the history to life through engaging storytelling. I may have been disappointed in coming to the museum on my own, without the experience of the tour, but luckily Meli was there to provide context and explain the historical artifacts. Throughout the tour, she shared fascinating historical nuggets that left us eager to learn more. Overall, the Afro-Panamanian walking tour was a fantastic experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Panama. It’s a perfect way to appreciate the blending of culture and African heritage that exists in this vibrant country.

This was an enlightening and fascinating tour given by Meli. It was a great history lesson on black experience in the roots of Panama and the pre-Colombian exploration from Africa.

I had been wanting to travel to Panama for some time and once I planned my trip. It was important that I incorporated a cultural experience into the mix. So I shopped around and found the Black History: Shadow and Lights Tour hosted by Meli. She was an excellent tour guide, she was thorough with her explanations and gave a very good history lesson about Panama. During the last part of our tour, another group arrived and a gentleman stopped Meli to tell her that he tried to book her tour but she wasn't available. So this tells you how in demand she is. Lastly, when I told her my birthday was the same day we were touring. She gave me a card that she personally signed for me. I promise if you book her, you won't be disappointed.
