Step back more than 500 years and explore the rich — and often overlooked — history of African ancestry in Panama. This walking journey unfolds through two defining chapters: the colonial era, marked by the harsh realities of slavery and powerful acts of resistance, and the West Indian migrations — a period of labor, resilience, and cultural legacy that helped shape Panama’s identity.
• Our walk begins in Casco Antiguo, moving beyond the former walls that once divided the elite from the working-class community of Santa Ana.
• We continue along Central Avenue, a vibrant area filled with stories and local life.
• Then we visit the Afro-Antillean Museum to explore the lives and contributions of West Indian migrants who helped build the nation.
Optional: Lunch at San Felipe Neri Market for local comfort food and a refreshing natural juice. Book the Walking Experience + Lunch option.
This experience invites you to discover the shadows and lights that shape Afro-Panamanian heritage.

Visiting Panama from Chicago and this tour was a must! Wonderful, insightful tour exploring Afro Panamanian experience, building bridges of love to people of African disapora. Mel has curated a historical experience highlighting the impact of Black culture, music, food and so much more. From the transatlantic slave trade, to building the Panama Canal - she shines a light on the rich African experience. Issa’s political insights were also helpful.

Meli’s tour was amazing. It was a pleasure meeting her and her cousin for this special tour . She was punctual, very well versed in the history of Panama and the may pieces woven into the history of the culture and people. Would definitely recommend visitors to Panama signing up for this important tour and the real people of Panama who contributed to the history of the country and the resilience, often overlooked by many. Thanks Meli!

A truly wonderful Black History experience in Panama. Meli is kind, passionate, and deeply dedicated to sharing Afro-descendant history. Her explanations are clear, insightful, and very educational. Walking through the streets of Panama City while exchanging with her made the experience even more engaging and enjoyable. A must-do tour to truly understand and connect with this important history.

The Shadow and Lights tour was a phenomenal experience. Meli was fun and entertaining throughout the entire walking tour. She provided the group with cold water before the start of the tour. I would give ten stars if possible.

Traveling the world to learn more about Black history has taught me one thing: some of the most powerful truths are not found in textbooks. This tour brought those truths to life in a way I never expected. I discovered stories, perspectives, and historical facts that were never taught in school things that challenged me, inspired me, and pushed me to dig deeper into my own understanding of our history. It wasn’t just educational; it was transformational. If you’re someone who values culture, truth, and real history not the watered down version we often receive this tour is a must. It gives you knowledge that sparks curiosity, encourages research, and leaves you wanting to learn even more. I walked away with a renewed sense of pride, purpose, and connection. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to grow, to understand, and to honor the stories that shaped us.
