The twin lakes; Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are a must see.The mystery, which also makes it magical, is how a lake flows into another lake. As it happens, Lake Burera is almost 150 meters higher than Lake Ruhondo.Going around the lakes is quite a journey and to be able to see both lakes, especially the part where one lake flows into another requires an aerial view.

These Magnificent twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo and its Swamp Rugezi are the excellent photogenic, serene and scenic places for Bird watching activity. Moreover, Rugezi swamp is one of the most seven important birding areas IBAs) in Rwanda.

Their deep blue water surrounded by steep hills and tall waterfall with the outlines of the nearby virunga (volcanoes) provide a spectacular backdrop.

A canoe boat or Boat trip can be taken along the waters of the twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo for sightseeing.

With our guide Vincent we toured Lake Ruhondo by boat and it was magical. We were able to trek across two islands and meet islanders who live with so little but were so happy and very welcoming. We also tried archery and spear throwing on the company’s private island. Vincent was a fantastic guide and shared so much knowledge, he was born on one of the islands so there is no one better to tell you how the locals live. We thoroughly recommend this tour and Vincent 😊

My husband and I came to Rwanda to see a bit of Kigali and to do two gorilla treks. Our guide surprised us with a boat excursion arranged through Beyond the Gorillas. After driving to the Twin Lakes area, we boarded a boat for what we imagined would be a sunset cruise and sundowner. We were utterly delighted to visit an island inhabited by just 29 families, whose small homes and farms dotted the island. We were warmly welcomed by the dancing and music of the village women and then hiked around the island, learning about the families and their somewhat isolated lives. After a very satisfying visit, we went by boat to another nearby island to relax, enjoy drinks and snacks and a beautiful sunset. Lovely, unexpected experience.

I recently had an exceptional experience with Beyond the Gorillas tours. My guide was John. There was a switch in guides the morning of because the first tour guide was running late. This was swiftly corrected by providing a different guide for my excursion. I contacted Beyond the Gorillas to arrange a boat tour of Lake Kivu and had a wonderful time. My guide was attentive to all details, including making suggestions of activities to do the rest of the day and taking me to them. My tour included a lunch. Because I am vegan I was a bit concerned about whether I would have good food options. They called a restaurant in the area and arranged my meal, got back to me about food options and had the food prepared once I arrived. This was amazing an unexpected. John even contacted me the next day to make sure all was well and I had everything I needed. He also sent a colleague to check on my the next day in his absence because I placed a clothing order to be picked up the day before when we were together and he wanted to make sure I remembered the location! This was more than service. It was service with CARE. The experience I had with this company has made a huge impact on me and has helped my time here be more enjoyable, especially as someone traveling solo. Much gratitude
