5.00After reading mixed reviews about Bromo tours, I was relieved that this one from Malang was so straightforward. The driver texted me the night before with the exact pickup time (2:15 AM) and a photo of the jeep. We arrived at the Penanjakan viewpoint around 3:45 AM – early enough to get a spot on the lower platform with no one blocking our view. The sunrise colors shifted from deep purple to orange to bright yellow. Magical. The tour itinerary said 'breakfast included' we got a small box of pastries and a bottle of water. That's fine, but a hot drink would have been welcome at 4 AM on a freezing mountain. Also, the jeep driver rushed us through the Sea of Sand stop – only 10 minutes for photos. Ask for 20 minutes if you want good shots. Overall, a reliable, no-surprises tour for first-timers.

5.00I've seen Bromo photos a thousand times, but being there is different. This tour from Malang left at 2:45 AM, and we reached a quiet hilltop by 4:00 AM. There were only 12 people at our spot – not the hundreds at the main viewpoint. The sun rose behind Bromo and Batok, creating a perfect silhouette. Our jeep driver, Heru, made hot tea from a thermos he brought himself – that small gesture won my heart.
