  • A food tour that felt like being shown Budapest by a friend

This was one of the highlights of our time in Budapest. We joined a street food tour that took us to three genuinely excellent food spots, and it felt incredibly well thought out and complete. What really set it apart, though, was our guide, Balázs. He was not just knowledgeable about the food. He had a deep understanding of Hungarian history, from its earliest beginnings right through to modern times. At each stop, we did not just eat. We talked about the origins of the dishes, how and why they came to exist, and how food and history in Hungary have constantly influenced each other. It made every bite more meaningful and gave real context to what we were tasting. The conversations flowed naturally, with lots of humour and great banter along the way, which made the whole experience feel relaxed and personal rather than scripted. One of the highlights was stopping at Retro Lángos, where we had some of the best lángos we tried in the city. After that, we wandered through the Christmas markets, soaking up the atmosphere, before finishing the tour with delicious chimney cakes from a local stall, which was the perfect ending. By the end, it honestly felt less like we had been on a tour and more like we had spent the afternoon with a friend who genuinely wanted to share his city with us. We came away feeling like we understood not just Hungarian food, but Hungary itself and its people, so much better. We left very happy, very full, and very grateful. I would wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone who wants more than just food. It is culture, history, and connection all in one.

A positive, our tour guide was friendly and informative. However, the tour was conducted whilst walking along busy streets which made it difficult to hear our guide. Our first tasting was goulash and sausages which was at a very unappealing and very basic cafe, if it were not for our guide I would not have entered. Our food was brought upstairs by our guide on a brown tray with bread loose on the tray and a bowl of goulash each which was mostly liquid, very little meat of veg. The 3 sausages were served on a plate with a potato mash for us to divide between us. Our next cafe for a tasting of langos, which is a deep fried flatbread with garlic sauce and cheese, and a choice of 2 pancakes to share. Whilst this a nicer cafe there was no space inside and we ate outside at the only available table next to a busy road, which again meant it was difficult to hear our guide. We were then taken to a kiosk to choose 2 chimney cakes to share. The tour was 2 hours and the cost was £58 pp. Considerably overpriced. Better value would be to join a free guided tour and leave the appropriate tip and spend the rest on a fine dining restaurant.

Very informative guide, knew his history well. Food locations seemed a little disjointed (ie no plates initially for some of the products at restaurants). However, it was worth the experience of eating the local dishes.

Super fun easy walking tour. Rudy super friendly and knowledgeable about Hungarian food and history. This is local traditional food at sit down restaurants except for chimney cake. Better than a dinner reservation. Try it

  • A wonderful start to a great trip

This tour was a great way to start our trip to Budapest. Our guide Rudi was punctual, friendly and knowledgable and the directions to the meeting point were spot on. We were lucky to have been the only 2 on this particular tour that evening as it was off season. He took us on a very informative stroll around central Pest area with a handful of stops to try the local food. Each stop gave us the opportunity to sample some delicious local food and we enjoyed learning about the history and provenance that accompanied each dish as well as fascinating conversations regarding the history of Hungary and Budapest in particular. The tour was excellent value for money and was less of a tour for us, instead feeling more like an evening out with a new friend. We will definitely be joining Rudi and his colleagues on another tour the next time we are in Budapest! Thank you. 😊
