Nested in the northern Mindanao, Philippines, is a pear-shaped volcanic island of Camiguin, aptly called as the “Island Born of Fire”. It is roughly 100 kilometers north of Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental.

It can be considered as the Hawaii of the South East Asia as this island was created by volcanic eruptions and land movements. It has a total of seven volcanoes, one of which is the active Mount Hibok-Hibok that last erupted in 1953. Having been blessed by natural wonders and historical treasures, the island is truly a paradise. Among the most famous landmarks of Camiguin is an uninhabited white island that is around two kilometers off the shore of Agoho. It is actually a sandbar that offers a picturesque view of Mt. Hibok-Hibok. This sandbar submerges substantially during high tides.

Walkway to the Old Volcano and Via Cruces

The slope of Mount Vulcan gets filled with prayers especially during Holy Week when the Panaad Festival happens. Devotees and tourists alike climb a series of steps which eventually becomes a mildly difficult hike. Along the way are statues depicting the 14 Stations of the Cross. These figures are about life-size and painted white, very easy to spot. Although the start of the trail was under the canopy of trees skirting the walk way, there were parts where they disappeared and we had to face the heat of the sun. It got tiring as we went on but the view from the top was simply breathtaking and was worth every step.

Sunken Cemetery

Mount Vulcan has erupted so many times before. Also known as the Old Volcano, Mt. Vulcan erupted in 1827 and 1862, which claimed hundreds of lives. In 1871, it had another eruption, this time causing the island’s old capital (during the Spanish era) sink underwater. One of the places that got soaked was the old community cemetery, which still emerged when the tide was low in the years following the disaster. But the story doesn’t end there yet. In 1948 and 1953, the old volcano demonstrated its immense power again, sinking the cemetery deeper under the sea. Today, it lies 20 feet below the surface. Corals has grown on and around tombstones and marine life has flourished, making it a unique and extraordinary diving destination. Marking the spot is a giant cross built on hardened lava in 1982.

The Old Church Ruins in Camiguin (also known as Old Spanish Church Ruins and Guiob Church) is an iconic landmark on the island which has stood the test of time following the volcanic eruptions of Mt Vulcan and Mt Hibok Hibok. The Old Guiob Church Ruins are everything, which was left from the Spanish church. This church was built in the 16th century and in one century it was destroyed. It happened on the 13th of May in 1871, when there was a terrible volcanic eruption. The town was completely ruined by Mt. Vulcan. The church lost all its roof, but the walls were strong enough and still remain. Just imagine: massive, beautiful walls, which remind about that terrible day and what had happened. This place really amazes and admires. Every remained piece of those ruins is a memo of violent and dark past. The atmosphere is so strong and full of strength and hope for the better future. Come here and feel strong emotions, which the past will give you.

Bura Soda Water Park is one of the most popular spring resorts in Camiguin. Its clean and clear water is not just good for swimming but for drinking as well. From the resort’s name itself, they claim that the overflowing water here tastes like soda. That would also mean that a visit here automatically gives you an unli-soda drink! I guess it makes sense for them to have a constantly flowing water like this considering how big the waterfalls are on the island. Some places are short of clean drinking water but it’s so abundant in this island that they’re swimming in it. Unlike your typical swimming pools with steady water and chlorine that hurts your eyes—the water in this pool is all natural and constantly flowing. It reminds me of some swimming pool resorts that change their water on a weekly basis only.

Sto. Nino Cold Spring

Take a dip at Sto. Nino Cold Spring, where spring water from the mountains flows into two pools. Swim in the large pool with mineral spring water surrounded by natural scenery, with the cold water serving as a perfect way to refresh and cool off. Kids will the enjoy smaller pool, which also features a sandy base, but doesn't get so deep. While swimming in the clear water, you'll encounter plenty of friendly fish. After your swim, have a drink and relax in the shade of palm trees. A visit to Sto. Nino Cold Spring represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Camiguin trip itinerary planning tool to plot your vacation.

Ardent Hot Springs

Ardent Hot Spring is one of Camiguin’s hot springs and the most popular on Camiguin Island near the tourist beaches of Agoho and Yumbing, in the mountainside of the famous Mt.Hibok-Hibok volcano, which supplies the hot and crystal clear water. It was a natural pool with the waters truly hot especially at the depthless point. The pool itself underwent beautification with the sides landscaped with natural stone formation, huge tropical trees, shrubs and decorative plants. The pool is now four-tiered with varying depths and warmth with the hottest still at the top. Stone pathways were created under tall tropical trees with shrubs and flowering plants at both sides. Dipping into the pool and take in the serenity of your surroundings. For sure, you will feel rejuvenated in both mind and body. Joint pains and muscles aches will be alleviated. Your tiredness will disappear! Enjoy the waters at any time although best in early morning and late evening. The spring is a boon even on rainy days.
