For those looking for a challenge, and being inside the mine means it's a perfect option when the weather is not so great! It is a unique environment, and you can marvel at the sheer scale of the chambers that were cut out by the miners long ago.

What To Expect

After putting on the safety gear we will walk the 10min to the start of the course, passing through some of the old mine tunnels. We then start a unique underground adventure inside the caverns of Honister slate mine. Similar to a Via Ferrata you will climb the walls, scale bridges and tackle wobbly ladders in this subterranean world. An adrenaline filled adventure climbing / scrambling activity that uses a permanently fixed cable for safety and protection up the rock face. This is the perfect activity regardless of weather.

As my son said ‘you do the via ferrata for adrenaline and the caves for fascination!’ Woody, our instructor was awesome, encouraging, chilled, insightful, friendly and knowledgeable. Totally would recommend!

Quality experience in a truly unique setting. We spent several hours climbing inside the slate mine and even got a taste of several other routes due to making good time. The routes were a good mix of challenging fun. Our instructor Woody was very personable, engaging throughout and even gave us some history lessons as we went. Would absolutely go again and would recommend anyone else who wants a one of a kind thrill to do the same.

We loved this activity - perfect for a rainy day in the Lakes. It is basically indoor Via Ferrata - the course was a great mix of challenge & excitement all in the unique surroundings of a Slate Mine. The whole family (2 adults & kids aged 14 and 11) had fun. Special mention to guide Matt, who was superb.

We had an amazing morning with Woody for our Climb the Mine Experience, was a great into to Via Ferrata and we can't wait to come back and try the outside routes! He was also kind enough to take a load of photos as we went and sent them all through to us that evening. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting the area as something really unique and works in all weather!

Climb the mine is an inside Via Ferrata with a zip line. It’s requires some level of fitness and a head for heights. We climbed up a couple of caverns and walked and scrambled through some tight spaces. Andy was our guide who was good fun. We booked into the 9am slot and so we’re lucky to have a small group with only 5 of us. We got to do an extra loop because we had time. We prepaid for the photo package, not sure this is worth it though. Would definitely recommend this activity if coming to the Lakes with teens.

We went for a six person climb in the mine with Woody today which was absolutely brilliant! It was a great activity for a foggy day in the Lake District and a brilliant way to have a great day whilst social distancing. Just the right amount of difficulty for us six adults (30-36) and full of interesting learning about the mines along the way. Thanks for a fantastic experience!
