Balik Pulau
Join this exceptional Malaysian cycling adventure that lifts you off on an endless parade of rustic experiences. Your escapade through the bucolic side of Penang Island provides breathtaking scenery with the opportunity to connect with ordinary folks, taste the simple lifestyle or even try out your hands on local tasks and trades. Your cycling adventure in the first sector sets you off with a gradual approach and provides you with a rare opportunity to witness our diverse culture and ethnic race. Navigating on trails and back paths that run along waterways towards contrasting hamlets, villages, and farmlands lands you an opportunity to witness the local community while being entertained by our guide and the ever-gracious countryside folks.
Balik Pulau
After a short stop for coffee at a Hakka Chinese hamlet, the second sector restarts with an approach to the fisherman's outpost at a river mouth. The trip turns around to cover further distances as we set you to encompass different landscapes. Roam on the extensive network of trails snaking the palm oil estate in search of the labourers to get an inside story about the two-edged tales of this controversial commodity. Watch out! Herds of wild cows can easily get startled, stampede alongside us, and sometimes might change their direction into crossing our path. We then cross a Hokkien Chinese hamlet famed among locals for its cuisines. Viral by social media, at times this place is bustling with local visitors from across the country as they try to get a taste of all the exquisite assortments this place has to offer.

This tour was brilliant! We hadn’t rode bikes for a very long time but it didn’t matter. The ride was easy enough and great fun with lots of local knowledge and history thrown in. The ride takes you through some amazing scenery and the lunch provided was delicious. SJ and Princilia were great tour guides too! Would highly recommend!

If you are looking for a cycling tour whilst in Malaysia then Matahari Cycle tours is the one! We had a truly wonderful day with SJ and Princilia. Safety is first and foremost which was reassuring. Bikes were top notch with plenty of support given to the less experienced cyclists in the group. The tour is informative and fun. It culminated in a lovely traditional Malaysian picnic lunch in between some rice fields. SJ and Princilia are very passionate about what they do and it’s evident throughout the tour. Would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone. Thank you for a superb day

This was a fantastic bike ride we toured through the countryside and by rice fields. Lunch was also there and was so peaceful, we learnt a lot as well . Excellent guides and organisation. Would definitely recommend to see a bit of Penang that we had not experienced

Our first cycling tour as a family of 4 (boys age 13 and 11). A fun and rich cultural experience. The matahari team were excellent. We felt very well looked after and welcomed by all in the local area. Food excellent too. Ours boys say it was the best day of our holiday. We agree! Thank you Matahari.

I had a brilliant cycle tour of Penang with Princilia - we went around the south west of the island, and we didn’t just do cycling but princilia also explained local nature, architecture and culture. The bikes were good quality and the company feels really professional and focused on safety and quality - they took our bags in their vehicle so we didn’t have to cycle with them (but carried our suncream so we had easy access) and gave us as much water as we could need. I would really strongly recommend this as a great way to spend a day in Penang (and make room for all of the delicious food you will try in George Town!!) thanks again!

What a fantastic experience! We were lucky enough to have Princilia & SJ all to ourselves for the time of our tour which made the tour all the more special. They both have so much knowledge and passion for their land, their people and their culture. We got to try so many of the local delicacies and learn so much about the towns (Hamlets). I would highly recommend this experience to anyone coming to Penang and wanting a point of difference! Thank you to the Matahari Team for your time 💛

It was an amazing experience! What we liked most was nature and the local community. The non-commercial tour is something more authentic and quiet in an agricultural area of Penang. We ride the bikes on flat roads so it's easy for everyone. We saw rice fields, the beach, the jungle, temples, and areas where local people live. We also tasted very good local food and coffee. Our guide Princilia was very friendly and knew a lot. He explained many things to us while we were cycling and also when we visited the communities. We learn about your daily life and agricultural work. What surprised me the most was lunch in the middle of the rice fields. It was very special and different. I recommend this tour 100% is a sustainable activity, and done by the community. Perfect if you want to see the real life in Malaysia not only tourist.

Every year Mum and I do a vacation together, we chose this countryside tour specifically because of the reviews…. It did not disappoint ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ they catered for my nervousness pre ride , I felt support all the way, while still covering the needs of the other cyclists, beautiful scenery, so much local knowledge , clearly passionate about Penang. We will definitely be back!!! Great team, thank you. Lisa & Helen.

We had a wonderful time biking through the countryside. It was so beautiful and we learnt a lot about the trees and animals which lived there. We even saw a monitor lizard! Another highlight was visiting a house in a small village to see how the locals live. Great experience with my mum so it’s even suitable for en oldies! Thanks again
