Then we will continue through the Middle Ages and the period of Ottoman rule which left constructions like the Nis Fortress and the Skull Tower – a symbol of the struggle for freedom and independence from the Ottomans. In the end we will pay attention to the Modern history and the period of Nazi occupation of former Yugoslavia, visiting the Nazi Concentration Camp. Mediana
Your guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Sofia at 08:30 am. After approximately 2 hours of drive, we will reach our first sight – Medijana archaeological park, which is a Roman Imperial residence, nowadays closed due to renovation.
Skull Tower
Our next stop will be the Skull Tower, known also as Cale kula. The tower is now a museum dedicated to the Bulgarians and the Serbs who took part in the revolt against the Ottoman Empire. It was built from the Turks and constructed with the skulls of the killed rebellions. The idea of this act was to warn others what will happen if they revolt again.

Excellent experience to Niš, the tour guide was lovely and guided the group very well. I just wish that there was a bit more free time in the city center and a bit more recommendations given

Laid back. Only downside was a little squished in the car. Not a lot of history given by the guide but he was happy to answer any and all questions. Good amount of free time in Nis and at the museum.

Guide was very informative and friendly (Dmitr), made us feel welcome and safe. This trip was made even better by it being a small group, there were 8 of us, though the guide has said he's done it for just 1 and 3 before. All the stops were worthwhile but were mostly historical, so if that's what you like, this trip would be perfect. Mediana and the Skull Tower were very interesting. The concentration camp was a worthwhile stop as it was a small one but very emotional and informative of what we don't all know. The guide was very flexible with the breaks for toilets, and gave us pretty much however long we wanted at each stop, good freedom and choice, particularly when we came to Niš, we all decided on 2 hours there. Niš is definitely worth visiting, not too touristy and hardly any chains which was nice for a change. Plenty of shops, and restaurants and areas to walk, of which are all opposite the fortress. You wouldn't need more than 2 hours here. If you're in Sofia, this trip would definitely be worth doing if you have a spare day.
