Marche Kermel

The Kermel Market is a colonial-style building recognized as a UNESCO  world heritage site , very beautiful building from 1860 which was destroyed by fire in 1994, and rebuilt identically in 1997. The Kermel Market is still excellently preserved.  You can see lots of bright colors inside and outside the building.  The market provides beautiful fresh products, typical of Senegal.  Market gardeners, grocers, butchers and fishmongers are at the heart of the building, surrounded by decoration vendors, artists and artisans.

  • Overpriced, deceptive and badly organized

The person at the port was not holding an Agsil sign and did not have our names. The operator mostly did not respond to my messages. The pickup was a big mess! At Goree Island we had only 15 minutes to see the museum because the guide wasted 2.5 hours showing us irrelevant parts of the island and sending us to shops. There was no bottled water in the bus even though the operator informed me that there would be.... We did not stop at Place de l'Independence or Marche Kermel or the Presidential Palace - could not even take a photo in these places. We were not allowed to enter the Cathedral. Overall this was a very expensive tour which was badly organized and not worth the cost at all.

Fallou was an amazing guide! Very knowledgeable and helpful. The group had a great time. I’d highly recommend them again. This was an experience that I’ll never forget. Learning about my history was incredible. Be prepared for the emotional feelings.

  • Goree Island - Maison des Esclaves—The House of Slaves

Nothing can prepare you for the overwhelming flood of emotions that rush through you when you step onto Goree Island. The cobblestone streets, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, seem to guide you toward a place where history’s darkest moments are etched into every corner. This island, so serene on the surface, holds the grim history of the transatlantic slave trade—where human lives were commodified, where brutality from Europeans was the norm, and where the seeds of centuries-long oppression were sown. It’s a place that feels both haunted and hallowed, and as I walked its paths, I realized that I was not ready for what I was about to witness. My guide, had told me to prepare myself. But no amount of preparation can brace you for the weight of history that hits you square in the chest when you approach the doorway marked Maison des Esclaves—the House of Slaves. The moment you see the weathered wooden frame and the words etched above it, your heart starts racing. You realize you’re about to enter a space where lives were shattered, dreams were destroyed, and where unspeakable horrors unfolded behind these very walls. This is where the first human beings—men, women, and children—were kidnapped from their homeland, shackled, and led to the waiting slave ships that would carry them across the Atlantic into a nightmare.

Our tour guide, Agsil, made our visit to Dakar & Gorée Island unforgettable. They expertly navigated us through the island's profound history and its present-day charm with deep knowledge and genuine passion. Their storytelling at the House of Slaves was incredibly moving, bringing the past to life in a respectful and impactful way. They also highlighted the island's beauty, culture, and resilience, making the tour both educational and uplifting. Highly recommend this guide for anyone visiting Dakar & Gorée Island!
