Construction of the fort began in 1678 by Prince Muhammad Azam, the son of Emperor Aurangzeb. However, the prince was recalled to Delhi before completion. His successor, Shaista Khan, continued the work but halted it abruptly after the tragic death of his beloved daughter, Pari Bibi (Lady Fairy). He began to view the fort as unlucky, leaving it in the captivating, semi-finished state we see today.
