Charyn Canyon
Charyn Canyon is one of Kazakhstan’s most breathtaking natural wonders, often referred to as the “little brother of the Grand Canyon.” Stretching over 154 kilometers along the Charyn River, this majestic canyon showcases rock formations that are over 12 million years old. Its red, orange, and golden cliffs create surreal landscapes that seem straight out of another world. The most famous part of the canyon is the Valley of Castles, where wind and water have sculpted towering rock formations resembling ancient fortresses. Some canyon walls rise up to 300 meters, with winding trails leading to stunning viewpoints and shaded spots perfect for a break. Charyn isn’t just about its striking beauty — it’s also home to a rich ecosystem. Rare plants and animals thrive here, including an ancient grove of Sogdian ash trees that survived the Ice Age.
