Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)
Next, we reach Vergina where we visit the Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, situated in the borders of the village. The characteristic Golden Larnax (funerary casket), an urn with the cremated remains of Phillip II is marked with a 16-rayed sun, the symbol of Macedonia. The Sun of Vergina (or Star of Vergina), which is characteristic symbol of the Argead Dynasty (of the King Phillip II and Alexander the Great) was found together with the excavations that brought back to light his father’s Royal Tomb. 4 of the sun rays represent of the 4 classical elements and the other 12 sun rays represent the 12 Olympian Gods. Admire the golden oak wreath that Phillip II had during his funeral pyre, military armors. Later, we enjoy our lunch break in a restaurant with greek traditional flavours. Last stop before our departure is at the grand New Museum of Aigai, hosting findings and artifacts unearthed from the soil of the old capital;

Absolutely stunning collection of artifacts along this tour. We loved every location more and more. The museum at Aigai is a jaw dropping experience! Admission to the museums was more than reasonably priced, the museums almost feel like a private experience, the lunch stop was delicious and the history from our tour guide made the drive go by quick! Can’t recommend this tour enough!

The in depth knowledge of guide ( him being an archaeologist) was very informative and appreciated. Seeing King Phillips belongings in person is well worth it. Overall the trip was excellent !

The highlight is the archaeological site of Vergina. Regrettably the site of Pella was overgrown with long grass and the outline of the ruins often not discernible.

Guide was very professional and has guided and explained very well. All expressed very clearly in English. The sightseeing was very interesting and well presented, besides, the environment was very nice. Only the timetable was a little too tight.

The experience was very good made much better by the fact that we had the luck to go on the one day of the year that all entrance fees were free. The tomb of Philip 2 of Macedonia was the highlight of the trip. Anybody that is at all interested in history should see where the whole story of Philip and his son started out. All this was explained very well by a wonderful guide.

The trip did not cover guided tours of the archeological site as well as the museum. Nor did it cover entrance tickets. If you have visited any other archeological site in Egypt or Turkey, you may easily skip this.
