Al Shahaniya Racetrack
Remote-controlled, toddler-sized robot jockeys, clothed in colourful racing silks delight locals and tourists, as they ride the lanky mammals across the sandy track. Racing camels can run at speeds of up to 40 mph in short sprints and may continue at 30 mph for as long as an hour. The operator applies the whip antenna, commands the jockey to pull on the reins, and shouts encouragement to the camel via a built-in speaker.
Zekreet Fort Ruins
The crumbling ruins of Zekreet Fort appear to be ancient, but the site was built only 200 years ago, perhaps by the pirate leader, Raḥmah ibn Jābir al-Jalāhimah. It was used for just a decade or two. Visit Zekreet Fort to see how Qatar’s sun, sand, winds and occasional rains have reduced the structure to an outline of the former fortification. Walk around the fort’s typical square shape. Note its corner towers including three circular in shape and one square.

This was a very interesting tour and a good way to see parts of Qatar beyond the city of Doha. We had a small group (myself, the driver, and two others) so were able to have some conversation and listen to music to pass the time to the drive out west and back. The desert is really beautiful in its starkness - such a contrast to Doha and well worth the visit! Rehan was also an excellent guide - he quite literally took me by the hand to make sure that I could explore the rock formations safely. The trip was as-promised around four hours round-trip, including a quick stop for karak chai. If you're looking to get out of the city, I highly recommend this tour.

It's great. It's worth it. “This trip was a more than expected experience: the desert was magnificent, the sunset was beautiful, the itinerary was reasonable, and the driver was professional and patient. The whole process is comfortable and safe, the photo spot is very out of the picture, the service is meticulous, highly recommended!

We had a very enjoyable half-day West Qatar tour with Rehan. He was friendly, helpful, and very attentive throughout the trip, and he took plenty of great photos for us at each stop. We especially appreciated his flexibility — he even brought us to Film City despite it not being on the original itinerary (unfortunately it was closed at the time). Overall, a relaxed and well-run tour, and we would happily recommend Rehan to others exploring West Qatar.
