Make a day trip to Drottningholm and experience a historic milieu of the highest international standards. The combination of the exotic Chinese Pavilion pleasure palace, the palace theatre and the magnificent palace gardens make a visit to Drottningholm a unique experience.
Influenced by French prototype, the palace was built by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder by commission of Queen Hedvig Eleonora. A number of royal personages have since then left their mark on the palace.
The Palace is Their Majesties the King and Queen's permanent home residence. The rooms in the southern wing of the palace are reserved for this purpose. The rest of the palace and grounds are open to the public year round.

Drottningholm Palace
Drottningholm Palace is on UNESCO's World Heritage list. It is the most well-preserved royal castle built in the 1600s in Sweden and at the same time is representative of all European architecture for the period.
Inside the pavilion, Chinese-inspired Swedish Rococo furniture stands alongside imported Chinese objects. Several of the rooms still have their original Chinese silk and paper wall coverings. There are also lacquered screens, stained glass, porcelain and other decorative objects, many of which were probably imported by the Swedish East India Company. However, some of the Chinese objects here are even older, including pieces from the times of Queen Hedvig Eleonora and Queen Kristina, when porcelain was incredibly expensive.

We have never had a worse travel experience. We booked this tour for 9:30am. We were emailed a note less than 24 hours before the tour that the tour company had decided we would go at 1:30pm! When we received the email we clearly told them we could not take the tour that afternoon. No matter what we said or who we contacted, they charged us any way! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY.

We had a wonderful driver who was knowledgable and quite informative and quite flexible. She also provided us with a tour of Stockholm on the way to the Drottningholm Palace.

Very relaxed drive to the castle. Interesting background information but also not too long-winded. Only a pity I did not know in advance that the opera tour is only scheduled with a guide from the castle and only at predetermined times.

I would have rated it higher however working with the tour operator was challenging. This is a 3 hour tour. That should be clearly stated in the description on the site. Further I got little information from the operator about the tour or itinerary. I did get a question about when I wanted to be picked up - I chose 10:00 am. Then radio silence. On the day of the tour, I was informed I would be picked up at 13:00. Then I was told 11:40. Only after I asked I got the name of my tour guide. My tour guide was lovely and well informed. The itinerary is as follows drive to palace, tour palace and then drive to Chinese pavilion and tour pavilion. We chose to walk from pavilion back to palace. That was lovely. The weather was perfect.

Our guide Kate was lovely as is Drottningholm, but the man she works for at Viator – unbelievingly rude! After booking my tour and providing all necessary info, I was informed by email that the tour would cost 120 euros more payable the day of the tour. When I tried to pay the additional amount by credit card, Kate could not process it and called the Viator office to do so. Viator said they could not take a credit card (what super large travel business does not take credit cards?) and that I must pay in euros which I did not have. After explaining, I asked again about using a card. After all, I had booked with a credit card! The man on the phone told me he would take a card, but that he would charge a 24 percent processing fee! I politely shared that I thought that was exorbitant and have never been charged that much. He then accused me of trying to cheat him!! I was shocked. He then hung up on me! My guide Kate was embarrassed and apologetic. I volunteered that I could pay her in American dollars and we settled up then.

Kate was great!!! Besides a great tour, she answered so many questions about the history of Sweden and life there today. Learned so much! Fun and educational...can’t beat that!
