5.00Our 3rd tour guide of the day, Islam Shady, was cheeky and full of good fun. He was keen to take us to a "kebab shop" in his neighbourhood. We were dubious, but when in Rome! The Al Ustad Special Kebab turned out to be a hidden treasure. Founded in 1978 by Mohammed Ali Ansari, an Iranian immigrant who came to Dubai as a child, the restaurant was opened with a simple goal: serve honest, flavourful Persian‑style kebabs. Over the years, Ansari became a beloved figure in the community, known for his generosity and personal touch. The walls of the restaurant are covered with thousands of photos, showing royalty, Bollywood stars and regulars who have dined there over decades. After his passing in 2015, his sons Abbas, Majeed and Taleb continued the family legacy, keeping the focus on traditional recipes, smoky charcoal-grilled flavours and a welcoming, no‑frills atmosphere. We were lucky enough to meet one of his sons who was more than willing to share his fathers story. It was such a thoroughly enjoyable unique experience! Our next stop was the Dubai mall where Islam expertly guided us to all the sights; the Aquarium, a fossilised skeleton of a dinosaur, an ice rink and then out into the Waterfront promenade just in time to see the fountain show from the Souk Al Bahar bridge. After a quick passing of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, we arrived at the museum of the future. It was a lively tour and the banter between Islam and Srawan, our driver made the trip very entertaining.
