Gangaramaya Temple
Gangaramaya is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Colombo, started by the famous scholar monk Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera in the late 19th Century. After the Venerable Sri Sumangala, his chief pupil Devundera Sri Jinaratana Nayake Thera took on the administration of the temple. It was he who laid the foundation to convert the little temple to an institute of international reckoning. The next chief incumbent was the Ven. Devundara Keerthi Sri Sumangala Jinaratana Vacissara Thera, the teacher of the Ven. Galboda Gnanissara, who worked to make the Gangaramaya what it is today: much more than a temple in the conventional term, but a place of worship, a seat of learning and a cultural centre.
Sri Ponnambalam Vanesar Kovil
The Sri Ponnambalawaneswaram Temple was built during the time of the British rule in Sri Lanka by Ponnambalam Mudaliyar, who lost his life whilst fighting for Sri Lanka’s independence and who wished to provide a place of worship for the Hindus. Hence a small temple was built, dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. This temple displays ancient Dravidian architectural styles. In 1905, this temple was inherited by the son of Ponnambalam Mudaliyar; Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan, who was a renowned Ceylon Tamil lawyer, politician and Solicitor-General of Ceylon. The Kovil we see today was built by Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan. This temple is one of the very few solid granite temples still in existence in our country. The temple is quite dark since it is made of stone, and is only illuminated by the flames of oil lamps. When you enter through the wooden doors, the synchronized chanting and the sound of bells fill your ears. The walls and stone pillars found in this temple are carved intricately.

We were very disappointed with this Tuk Tuk tour in Colombo. We arrived at the pickup point ten minutes early. When 10:00 a.m. arrived and our tour guide was nowhere to be seen, we waited and attempted to contact the company using our internet connection. After waiting for some time, another Tuk Tuk driver approached us and offered assistance. When we explained our situation, he kindly called the number on our booking form and informed the tour guide that we had already been waiting for over 20 minutes. When the guide eventually arrived, he claimed he had gone to meet us at the Lighthouse, insisting this was the pickup location. However, this directly contradicted the pickup point clearly stated in our booking confirmation. Unfortunately, the tour itself did not improve much from there. During the first hour, the guide spent most of his time on his phone, only occasionally looking up to give brief explanations of the places we passed. In the market, he failed to notice that we were no longer following him, as we had stopped to look at produce while still distracted by his phone. While some of the locations we visited were interesting and beautiful, the experience felt rushed and unfocused. We were taken to an expensive tea shop and then told we would be visiting jewellers, which we declined as this was not of interest to us. The guide then suggested taking us to the beach near the golf course before dropping us at the Lighthouse, which he again referred to as the designated drop-off point. We instead asked to be dropped back at the market we had visited earlier, resulting in the beach stop being skipped entirely. The tour is advertised as lasting 4 hours and 30 minutes; however, our tour lasted no more than 2 hours and 30 minutes. This was extremely poor value for the amount we paid, particularly after learning what the Tuk Tuk driver who helped us initially would have charged for a similar experience. In hindsight, we regret not cancelling the tour when the guide arrived late and choosing a provider who appeared more professional and customer-focused.

I visited Colombo with my partner, and it was a wonderful experience. We explored many popular tourist attractions as well as local places, which gave us a real feel of the city’s culture and daily life. The mix of sightseeing, local experiences, and friendly people made our trip truly enjoyable. We will definitely cherish these memories and recommend Colombo to other travelers.

The guide provided all necessary information as we traveled around the various sites within the city. Very pleasant guide. Time was made available at all scheduled point of interest to able to view them to the extent that you wish. Overall, an excellent tour and exceptional value for money. A great way to see the city.

We enjoyed our tour around Colombo to see the various sights and landmarks with our driver, Mr. Caviar. The Hindu and Buddhist temples were especially interesting. It was good to drive through the markets with the top of the tuk tuk off as it gave a much better view and, for us, it was preferable to walking around in the heat. We would have liked to have had better visual appreciation of the colonial architecture as it is difficult to see the vastness of these buildings from a tuk tuk.

A good tour to see most of the city in 3-4 hours, slightly scary for me tbh, as it was my first time in a tuk tuk 😅, I did survive though, that's a bonus I guess. Food was delicious, I did turn red while tasting, so learn from my mistake and check the spice level first. Overall, I would totally recommend it if you are in Colombo.
