Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina
Explore the Atlantic Rainforest in the Serra da Bocaina National Park near Paraty. On this fascinating Wild Food Walk leading Brazilian forager, Jorge, will share with you some of his vast knowledge of amazing local plants – their scientific and popular names, their nutritional qualities and medicinal charcteristics. After you meet the guides, there is a short journey by road into the rainforest covered mountains near Paraty. The wild food walk takes place on forest trails in the Altantic Forest. We use a number of different trails to minimise our impact on the environment but on each route, in addition to walking on forest trails, you will also see the agro-forestry system of farming in action and visit waterfalls and swimming holes. After a short talk on safety and responsible foraging Jorge will take you into the forest, identifying and collecting amazing and tasty fruits and flowers, leaves and mushrooms as you go. Jorge will help you identify edible plants and there will be plenty of wide ranging conversation from nutrition, medicine and herbalism to botany, cookery, horticulture and history. At the end of the walk there is a chance to have a refreshing swim in the freshwater swimming holes in the forest. This is a fascinating and fun day out for anyone interested in wild food or just curious about the Rainforest. This Rainforest to Picnic Table tour finishes with a delicious light lunch made with many of the plants you have foraged on the way.

Jorge and Rodrigo were incredible people. They have completely changed our conception of what food is. This experience is not about finding food as we know it in the forest but rather traveling back in time rediscovering the lost knowledge of what forest can provide. To fully enjoy this experience you’ll need to keep an open mind because during the walk you will be discovering things that are edible and consume them. The experience will vary depending on what you happen to find in the forest. There might be a tour or two on the same day so in this case the early birds definitely get the worms. If you have the chance, ask Jorge for restaurant recommendations. He consults with chefs from Paraty and that can definitely enhances your gastronomic experience!

I made this walk with friends and we learned a lot about PANCs - the unconventional edible plants. We harvested mushrooms and flowers that were served for lunch. Jorge, our guide, gave us incredible knowledge of forest plants. Some of them I already knew, but I had no idea I could eat. The trail is easy and with the stops becomes accessible for most people. The site of Seu Zé, where we lunch, provides a sensational landscape of the valley in the Sertão de Taquari. It is very worth it for us Brazilians to know more of our land and all the good that it can offer us.

Fascinating tour from beginning to end. We walked through a beautiful stretch of Atlantic forest, knowing and recognizing edible plant species and/or with medicinal effects - knowledge passed from generation to generation and ratified by science - under the guidance of Jorge Forager - sympathetic and passionate about the mission of informing and transmitting such knowledge. At the end of the tour, we taste the fruits of the collection in a delicious and capriciously prepared way to delight us even more. Tour for the whole family.

Walking with Jorge through the woods is a life lesson! I realized how ecologically illiterate I am, and how much one has to learn in nature. I feel very happy today when I identify some plant, I feel closer and connected to nature. Jorge is a sensitive and extremely humble educator! I definitely want to do more infinite times!! Thank you ♥️

This is, by far, the most exciting and interesting trip I have ever done. For someone who lives and breathes food and drink for a living I was absolutely blown away by the knowledge, the expertise and the passion that Jorge has. Michael is a fantastic interpreter and is clearly as interested in learning about the forest’s bounty as anyone. It also shows that Jorge doesn’t just do cookie cutter tours, every walk is different, in fact, it’s almost like Jorge is just off collecting things that interest him and you’re being narrated through him collecting his lunch, it’s utterly wonderful. This is really a enjoyable trip, really different from lots of standard excursions on offer. Micheal picked us up in the morning from our accomdation and we drove up into the rainforest picking up Jorge on the way. The walk is through the old gold trail and is really nice without the added value of being with Jorge Jorge is a local guy who is an expert in the plants around the area. He picks and explains via translation into English from Micheal as you walk. Sometimes you taste on route, other times he saves in his bag what he picks. It is really safe and no-one is forced to try anything they don't want to. However what he picks is really quite tasty. At the end of the trip you eat at a local place in beautiful countryside. Jorge pops into the kitchen and makes a few dishes to add to the food with what he has picked. What also makes it special is the attention and obvious passion of Micheal and Jorge - they are really nice guys
