Kharakhorum Museum
Despite ancient Mongolians being able to create a large scale civilization, there is little to no documentation and proof about the history they created. In most cases, it is the notes written by foreign travellers and chronicles of neighboring kingdoms and empires that currently serve as crucial research documents. This is largely due to the nomadic culture of Mongolians, not staying in one area for a long time. As a result, the inscriptions written on various boulders and cliffs by our ancestors have remained to this day and age through several hundred years of time. Moreover, the remains of the large city and artifacts discovered through archeological excavations also continue to serve as real “witnesses” of the ancient history and civilization of Mongolia.

Fantastic way to see more of Mongolia outside of Ulaanbaatar! A significant amount of time will be spent in the car, so this tour is also great if you don’t want to walk too much or if you want to catch up on sleep. Fair warning that a lot of the experiences cost extra, so bring plenty of cash. Prices for 1 person (to the best of my memory) in MNT: Camel ride: 40k Karakhorum musuem: 10k Taking photos/videos inside the Karakhorum museum: 25k or 35k? Erdene Zuu monastery: 10k Traditional Mongolian music at the ger camp: 25k Dinner/overnight stay/breakfast at the ger camp: 170k - NOTE: actually unsure how this was supposed to be paid, as apparently they didn’t accept that much cash. My driver ended up transferring it from his account (?) and taking the cash Lunch: ~20-30k for each direction (Would also recommend bringing personal tissues/wipes, as many of the bathrooms along the way do not have toilet paper/soap) My original tour guide got injured the night before and was unable to join, but my incredible driver, Chinzo, went above and beyond to make sure my trip was as comfortable as possible. He not only made additional stops for me to take photos of the scenery/wildlife, but also offered extra items such as wet wipes, toilet paper, snacks, etc…..and made sure I was safely checked into my next accommodation when dropping me off. Overall an incredible experience- thank you for everything!!
