Udong Mountain
Oudong in Cambodia: the stupa that was built in 2002 by King Norodom Sihanouk atop the hill of Oudong. New Preah Sakyamoni Chedi that houses a relic of Buddha. Oudong has been the capital city of Cambodia for nearly 250 years before the King moved to Phnom Penh in 1866. During that period of time, the territory of Cambodia remained coveted by the two powerful neighboring countries: Thailand and Vietnam. It passed in turn under the control of the one and the other. This was a black period in the history of the Khmer Kingdom. More than 20 Khmer Kings reigned in Oudong. In the mid-19th century, King Ang Duong attempted to extricate the country from poverty. He built canals, bridges and hundreds of pagodas in the region of Oudong. Fearing a definitive splitting of his country in favor of its two neighbors, the King requested the protection of France.

The tour was very well conducted and scheduling of the stops were times perfectly. We went to the Oudong mountain area first thing in the morning when the tour began, with a small stop at the Silversmiths' village on the way. Our guide, Mr Suyhong was very nice, with lots of information to share, and made the trek on the mountain extremely easy by starting from an alternative route from the standard one. Post lunch, at wonderful place on his suggestion, we had a great time exploring the highlights of Phnom Penh city, especially the grand palace and Silver Pagoda. Definitely recommend the tour and the services of Mr Suyhong.

We had a delightful and informative tour with Sam Ang at the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Oudong Mountain, and Phnom Penh's Mountain Pagoda. At Oudong Mountain, Sam guided us along an easy-to-climb path that is different from other tours' steep staircase climbs while providing great information regarding the history of the mountain. As a private tour, aspects were customizable quickly and seamlessly. After I saw silver elephants at the Royal Palace and asked where I could buy some, Sam recommended that we stop at a manufacturer of silver goods on our way to Oudong Mountain, where I purchased several nice silver items at great prices. Later in the tour at the Mountain Pagoda, Sam helped me with negotiating the purchase of additional souveniers. Sam knows Cambodian history quite well and relayed it to us in an easy-to-understand and organized manner throughout the tour. We feel more enlightened regarding Cambodian history as a result, and we're lucky to have had Sam as our tour guide. The tour's driver similarly did well, expertly navigating the roads safely and keeping the tour on-track. Thanks!
