This is a long but ultimately rewarding day trip from Kigali, beginning with a 5am departure. It’s undeniably an early start and a full day on the road, but the westward drive is beautiful. As the hills rise and the scenery gradually unfolds, the journey itself becomes part of the experience. Gisenyi and Lake Kivu are truly picturesque. The vast openness of the lake, fishing boats moving steadily across the water, and hillside homes in the distance create a serene and memorable landscape. For me, the Lake Kivu segment was the highlight — particularly the visit to Nyamyumba Hot Spring. Soaking in the warm mineral waters and enjoying a traditional lakeside massage was both relaxing and distinctive, a welcome way to unwind after the long drive. The cultural elements of the tour, including traditional dance and pottery demonstrations, offered insight into local life. A simple Rwandan lunch rounded out the day nicely. My guide, Jerry, was accommodating, informative and pleasant company throughout. He managed the schedule efficiently and kept the long journey engaging with conversation and explanations. One aspect I felt more uncertain about was the village visit. The route to reach it was quite challenging, and personally I felt somewhat uncomfortable with how poverty was framed during the stop. It came across as positioned in a way that might evoke sympathy from visitors. I felt the itinerary could potentially be refined — for example, by including additional scenic viewpoints around Gisenyi and Lake Kivu, which would further showcase the region’s natural beauty. Overall, this tour delivers striking landscapes and a deeply relaxing Lake Kivu experience, particularly at the hot spring. It is best suited for travellers prepared for an early start and a long but scenic day.

We had the best time with Jerry exploring the western part of Rwanda. Visiting Lake Kivu was absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. The hot springs were such a fun and relaxing experience, and the fresh big fish we ate by the lake was honestly one of the best meals we had on the trip. Jerry was friendly, knowledgeable, and made everything feel easy and enjoyable. I highly recommend him and these activities. It was such a special experience.

Olivier, from the moment we took charge, made us benefit from his knowledge of this wonderful country from an economic, historical or human point of view. The course is adapted to our expectations, a paradise stop at the hot springs. Excellent fish lunch, in an idyllic setting chosen by Olivier. His perfect knowledge of French was a plus for us. Accompanier highly recommended 🤩

The whole tour from start to finish was a beautiful experience. My family and I were the only ones - an exclusive tour! We were very comfortable and enjoyed the lovely scenery. Our tour guide Jerry did a wonderful job - he demonstrated his knowledge of the surrounding areas leading up to and around Gisenyi and Lake Kivu. We had stopovers to stretch our legs and use the loo (as applicable). Jerry also provided us with breakfast and lunch!!! I particularly loved the boat cruise and the hot springs, and will definitely visit Kigali again. It was definitely worth the cost!

Visited Rwanda and had an incredible time exploring the beauty of this country. I did the Kigali City Tour, visited Nyungwe National Park, and spent time in Gisenyi by Lake Kivu. Each experience was unique and amazing. The city tour gave me a great insight into Kigali’s rich history and culture, while Nyungwe’s breathtaking views and canopy walk were unforgettable. Gisenyi was a peaceful retreat with stunning views of Lake Kivu – perfect for relaxing after the adventure. Rwanda is such a beautiful country with beautiful people, and the service everywhere was excellent. I definitely encourage my friends and family to visit this wonderful country. As someone from Nigeria, I felt right at home!
