It takes about 2.5 hours to drive from Taipei to Hualien Taroko Gorge. The scenery along the way is beautiful. Hualien Taroko National Park is famous for its majestic and almost vertical marble canyon landscape. Taroko is a world-class tourist attraction in Taiwan, whether it is the amazing Taroko Shakadang Trail, the canyon cliffs at Yanzikou, the majestic Hehuan Qilai Mountains, or the excavation history of the Central Crossing Highway all kinds of nature. The cultural landscapes are very unique and attractive. We welcome tourists from all over the world to come to Taiwan to experience the stunning scenery of Taroko Gorge!
Due to the devastating earthquake that struck Taroko National Park on April 3, 2024, most attractions are closed. Officially confirmed stable recreation areas reopening from July 1, 2025 include: Chongde Recreation Area, Tongli Village, Tianxiang Visitor Center, Tabido Trail, and Xiangde Temple.

Qingshui Cliff
Qingshui Cliff, located between Heping and Chongde, is a wonder on the east coast of Taiwan and one of the eight great scenic spots in Taiwan. Qingshui Cliff is more than 1,000 meters high, facing the Pacific Ocean at an angle of almost 90 degrees. The road stretches for more than 20 kilometers and twists and turns. There are cliffs on one side and the vast sea on the other. Breathtaking.
Xiangde Temple
Xiangde Temple, which can be reached on foot from Taroko Tianxiang Recreation Area, faces deep streams and rushing water on three sides, with an altitude of 450 meters, surrounded by peaks, valleys and ravines. It is unforgettable.

I was 15 minutes away from being picked up by "Taiwan Charlie" and I received a text that the guide's car broke down. They were looking for an English speaking back up driver. I knew they were going to cancel, which they did. I had a great day planned, but since this is a shady outfit, I had to go to plan B. Oh, and Taiwan Charlie offered to buy me lunch if I could take the tour the next day. Really, like I'm hanging around Taipei with extra time on my hands. Sorry Charlie, bad review.

This was a wonderful day trip, we had Oliver as our driver and guide and he was the best. Very knowledgeable and made the day so perfect! It is a longer drive to and from Taipei but worth it. Thank you to Charlie and Judy as well for finalizing our booking, overall a wonderful experience.

We had a great time seeing the sites at Taroko Gorge National Park. We really appreciated how there were so many stops, even just to hop out and get a quick picture at a nice viewpoint. We would highly recommend this tour, it’s a great way to see a lot in one day with a local guide.

Taiwan Charlie Chartered Tour is not a reputable company. Let me explain why...I booked this trip on a Wednesday for a Saturday tour that week. I upgraded to the 9-person van for my family of four (two adults and two kids) so we would.have more space as I knew the drive time was 2+ hours each way from Taipei City. I also updated my tour on Wednesday when I noticed the hotel pick up I initially selected was not correct. I received the first message from Taiwan Charlie Chartered Tour via the Viator app on Thursday confirming my reservation and that the driver/tour guide Danny will contact me. Unbeknownst to me, Danny reached out via WhatsApp and not through Viator. I was not expecting this and not have WhatsApp notifications enabled on my iPhone. Danny reached out on Thursday to let me know that the upgraded car was not available and to call Charlie to let him know. I did not see this message until Saturday, the morning of our tour. This message should've been communicated to me via Viator. Charlie never contacted me via Viator to let me know the transportation I selected was not available and did not offer to change the reservation to a standard car, which is half the price of the 9-person van. This is dishonorable. Charlie knew the van I paid for was unavailable but still kept my money. Charlie also did not give Danny the updated hotel information. I only discovered the messages on WhatsApp on Saturday morning as we were waiting for the Danny and the car. He was at the wrong hotel. Danny arrived in a car that seated us four, but my husband had to sit in the front passenger seat, something we wanted to avoid. The car smelled like cigarette smoke. We went on the tour which was fine but we experienced some headaches because of the cigarette smoke in the car. I notified Charlie via Viator after the tour on Saturday and he wrote "Sorry, I asked Danny to notify you two days ago to modify the order, but you haven't responded. Now I can't refund the difference, sorry! Charlie" This is dishonest for many reasons: 1. Danny contacted me outside of Viator. I believe per Viator, tour operators are supposed to communicate through their own platform. 2. Charlie's message to me on Saturday verifies that he knew the van I paid an upcharge for was unavailable but chose not to contact me via Viator earlier. If he had, I would have responded right away. 3. Charlie can still do the right thing and refund me the difference and chooses not to. In my travels, good tour companies will refund your booking at once if something amiss arises. Taiwan Charlie Chartered Tour is not such a company. Please do not use Taiwan Charlie Chartered Tour. If you do, make sure everything is right when you first book, Any updates on Viator are not communicated to Danny the driver/tour guide. Contact them first if you want to book the van to make sure it is available. Make sure you have WhatsApp to communicate with Danny.

If you are interested in stunning scenic views and imposing landscape, this is the tour for you. It is impressive to see how a road was carved into the mountain side and the many impressive bridges that were built. The gorge is a natural beauty to behold and reminds us how nature when left alone makes its own path. Though it was a 3 hour drive there and back, it was worth it.
