Your trip departs from Te Anau and takes around 1.5 - 2 hours travelling in a vehicle, with short scenic stops, to arrive at Fiordland’s mountain "divide" - between east and west. Here the walk begins at the Divide Shelter with a steady climb on a well maintained track. Gaining an elevation of 400 meters, the ascent takes approximately 2 hours at a leisurely pace. On a fine day lunch is had on Key Summit, and in unfavorable conditions in a nearby shelter. After lunch you will descend back to the Divide Shelter before returning to Te Anau. You will spend approximately 5 hours walking based on your ability but you should be prepared for at least 4 hours walking at a leisurely pace with some hill climbing. This walk is rated 'moderate' as some fitness is required for the hill climb and potential for challenging weather conditions on occasion.

Our guide John and Jane were so kind and lovely. We stopped at several spots on the way to the Routeburn track and their explanation was very informative and helpful. As a solo traveler, I felt safer with the group on the track and they gave us a much nicer time of trail walk with all the care and talks. At the key summit, they served us some nice tea which warmed us up. Until the end of the trip, it was so much enjoyable and fun. I’ll recommend this to anyone who’s planning the trekking at Te Anau!

The guides were great and the hike is beautiful. This is a fabulous hike if you can't do the whole Routeburn tramp.

First of all, our guide, Andreas, was just so in tune with our group. I was a little unsure of the level of fitness needed, but he reassured us that it was “our” day, and he let us ascend at a measured pace. Plenty of photo pops and water breaks made it all so enjoyable. The scenery at the summit was extraordinarily beautiful. Under the tree canopy the forest landscape was vastly different than the alpine landscape above along the path. Lunch was delicious while taking in the views, and then we made our way down to regroup and then drove to make 3-4 surprise stops which added to our experience!! I can’t say enough good things, because it was awesome. Take this trek, and ask for Andreas. Kind, personable, and funny. It was a dream hike.
