Quinag is an 808 m high mountain range in Sutherland with just a 45-minute stunning car journey north from Ullapool. It’s not a single mountain but a dramatic range of peaks called Sàil Gharbh, Sàil Ghorm, and Spidean Coinich in Scottish Gaelic. This translates to the rough heel, the blue heel and the mossy peak. Owned and looked after by the John Muir Trust. Quinag is unusual in offering the general walker no fewer than three separate mountains over 2,500ft (Corbetts) a tour of all the summits is a fairly major undertaking. This means that this is no easy day out if you tackle all three. This is why we only take two mountains into our route for the day to make it more achievable for most. Your effort will be well rewarded with breathtaking views over Loch Assynt to the south, Conival and Ben More Assynt to the south-east and Loch a’Chàirn Bhàin. Walk details: 7.5 miles, 12 km – Ascent 800 m, Descent 800 m – Walking time 5 – 6 h

Our guide Sandy guided me and family friends along the shoreline and then up to the mountain top above Ullapool. The scenery was breathtaking and Sandy's explanation of the local history and geology was most interesting. As great as the day hike was, it was surpassed by the attention and care Sandy provided. At all times he was focused on the guest hikers, and when one guest encountered some difficulty on the descent, due to a hip replacement, Sandy provided hiking poles and assisted in the descent, while evoking calm and assurance from all of us. This was an outstanding day and one of the best days on our trip.

This was honestly the best walking vacation that we could have wished for in Gran Canaria. Rosie and Ben, our guides, made the experience an excellent adventure. They provided an excellent itinerary, which catered perfectly for a mixed ability group, our six day walk was perfect. Rosie and Ben are both very knowledgeable about the areas that that they take you to and their exceptional organisation skills allowed us the most amazing walking holiday hassle free. McKenzie Mountaineering provides exceptional value and it is well worth trying one of their guided walking/hiking tours.

If you have ever wanted to walk the West Highland Way but been daunted by the prospect of booking accommodation, carrying luggage, getting lost, giving up, I can thoroughly recommend McKenzie Mountaineering to take full control of all of that. You only have to turn up (in the right gear, of course). Rosie and Ben are lovely, very welcoming, encouraging and they organised a great walk for a great group people. I would definitely book with them again. By the way, the only thing they forgot to organise was the great Scottish weather. 😁 Thank you Rosie, Ben and Corrie for the best ever experience. ❤

Having waited this trip for 2 years it was all I could hope for and then some. 10 days of hikes, walks, castles, beaches, mountains and whisky tastings. The hikes were awesome, some more challenging than others and views to die for. I really enjoyed this tour as whisky and hiking are my favorite hobbies. I have hiked with Ben before so I am a returning customer and really looking forward doing more trips with Rosie.

My partner and I have just returned from an amazing 10 day walking/whisky tasting experience on the Inner Hebrides. Rosie is a fantastic leader (although I expected that having been on a previous walking holiday with her and Ben a few years ago). Everything was so well organised and accommodation/restaurants/distilleries we went to were superb. She makes all the walks really interesting (up on the mountains to down on the sands), providing loads of historical facts. Her knowledge of plants and their uses is just crazy. Can't wait to book my next holiday with them...Cairngorms for New Year and Gran Canaria in the spring here we come 🥰

I joined their 2021 west highland way tour and walked 96 miles in 7 days which was the best experience for me. Our tour guides, Rosie and Ben, were extremely helpful, kind, considerate, and professional. It was my first time to walk multiple days continuously and I would not be able to complete 96 miles without their advices and encouragements. I highly recommend joining tours orgainsed by Mckenzie Mountaineering.

Since first coming to the area of Assynt in 2004, I have wanted to go up Suilven and this year I finally did, with the much appreciated leadership and guidance of Ben. What a day! In the build up, Ben and Rosie were excellent with plenty of useful information and support. I felt prepared and ready. Ben picked me up and we started the day with an amazing cycle ride close to the start of the ascent. Ben was very knowledgeable regarding all things bikes and was appreciated going over tricky terrain. On the walking section, again Ben was very supportive and of course on the ride back. A thoroughly enjoyable day was made even better by Ben’s excellent and friendly company, fantastic support and knowledge and of course in completing the long sought after challenge. I would easily recommend this company and Ben and Rosie to anyone thinking of going up Suilven or any of their other activities and can’t wait for next year to have another adventure with them. Many thanks for a brill day!

A brilliant guided walk in a small group up one of Scotland's most iconic mountains, Stac Pollaidh. Always wanted to climb it since a camping holiday in the Geopark when I was a kid. Perfectly judged to accommodate varying fitness levels within the group, and full of fascinating information about the Assynt landscape, geology, flora and fauna - could not have been better. Despite the significant physical effort involved in getting up and down, and the need for care in some of the more precipitous parts of the path, a thoroughly relaxing, stress-free and enjoyable experience. Scotland at its best.

We did a hike to Scoraig peninsula, which was fantastic. Our guide organised a RIB boat crossing from Ullapool to take us to the start of the walk, and we were also incredibly lucky to see a pod of dolphins with their young while doing the crossing. This was a very special start to the day. We then crossed over the hill into the off-grid village before walking along a dramatic coastal path. Our Guide Rosie is a very knowledgeable and told us lots of interesting facts about the village community and we learnt so much from her about the flora. The pace of the walk accommodated people with varying levels of fitness and we all finished the walk feeling like we had achieved a substantial walk without feeling exhausted. This was because the group all chatted with each other and whenever Rosie stopped to allow people to chat up, she had a story to tell about the plant or animal life, which meant we weren’t thinking about the distance we walked or the fact we were allowing some people to catch up: it was so well judged. As a result of doing this walk I signed up to do another walk which I will write a separate review for. I would highly recommend McKenzie Mountaineering.
