I intentionally booked extra days in Bilbao so I could travel outside the city and explore Basque culture and Northern Spain’s coastal beauty. While I was dimly aware of Gernika’s history because of the Picaso painting of the same name, I learned so much from our fantastic guide, Joserra Combarro. Joserra was funny, interesting, knowledgeable, and genuinely nice. I was clueless that our first stop, which was to the gorgeous “island” of Gaztelugatxe, was an important location for the Game of Thrones series. While walking down then up to the top was a challenge to my 70+ years-old legs, it was well worth it. Our next stop, Mundaka, was picturesque with its wide bay made famous for its amazingly long, left surf break. Finally, Gernika. Joserra gave us the history behind Dictator Franco’s hatred of the Basque and his allowing Adolf Hitler to test his pre-WW2 air force bombing strategy on this peaceful town. This was a great 6-hour tour in a comfortable van with an exceptional guide. I highly recommend this tour.

Nora was FABULOUS! I have the upmost respect for her. She was knowledgeable, kind, caring, and is one of the best tour guides in Bilbao. She picked us up on time in front of “Puppy” (Guggenheim Museum). The van was clean, she offered us water, and was able to translate the tour in multiple languages. Our first stop was Gaztelugatxe. If you visit during the winter, make sure you bring a hat, gloves, umbrella, and comfortable shoes. The hike is a little challenging, but we all made it down and back safely. The views overlooking the iconic church, the masonry, the nature….. EVERYTHING was stunning. Yes, the filming of Game of Thrones is impressive, but visiting a breathtaking natural site in Basque Country, is priceless. The next stop was Mundaka where we grabbed a bite to eat at one of the local cafes. They had pintxos, other local dishes, and our favorite, Txakoli. Lastly, we visited the historic town of Guernica. What an amazing tour of Basque country. Thank you for your hospitality, Nora!

It's a bit physically challenging. You'll feel bad while doing the walking but elated when it's done.

This trip was amazing. My daughter and I enjoyed every part of it. Adur was our guide on the tour and he was so knowledgeable, and made the trip fun. He gave us our time and space for pictures. I give him 10 out of 10. I enjoyed every part of it.

This was a great day trip if you are visiting Bilbao and want to explore more of the Basque countryside and cost. We went to a nearby historical site which involves a nice hike and some stairs to a chapel that's on a tiny island. We visited a seaside town and watched the surfers, and most meaningful for me we visited Gernika and learned about the its history and connection to Picasso's famous painting of the attack on the town. The host was knowledgable and spoke excellent English.

It was OK. Our driver/tour guide was great - spoke excellent English, was talkative, knew his history so was informative but also entertaining. But the trip itself was just so-so. Gaztelugatxe is nice to look at but unless you want to do the hike to the monastery and then back up, there is a solid 90 minutes of dong nothing while waiting for those who did go on the hike. Mundaka was a useless stop and Gernika would have been also (just to see an outdoor mural of Picasso’s painting) but for the fact that we were there the last Monday of October, when they hold an annual harvest festival, and that actually was fun to see. But honestly don’t know if could recommend it otherwise.
