What To Expect

Volcanoes National Park

This is perhaps one of the most breath-taking wildlife experiences on earth!!! You get so close to these awesome giant primates. You stare at each other blankly not knowing who to break the long silence first. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga is a magical experience. These massive primates are extremely rare, with less than 700 living today. You will get within meters of the family, and be privileged to spend an hour amongst them. The trekking may be fairly strenuous; up to six hours or longer at a relatively high altitude. We encourage for your own enjoyment to make sure that you are perfectly fit and healthy. (We’ve had people as old as 70years old do gorilla tracking so this should not be a problem; all you need is to ask your driver guide to request a shorter group for you if you cannot trek far)It is important to bring good hiking boots, long trousers, gloves for protection against stinging nettles, some snacks & sweets (for you, not the gorillas) as well as sufficient water as the rain forest gets hot and humid during the day. You will spend one hour with the gorillas, but it is an hour you will never forget

We used Kawira for all our transportation needs in Rwanda — from airport transfers to Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking, and to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Their service was excellent, trustworthy, and the pricing was the best we found. I had been communicating with Ian Kinoti via email for months beforehand, and he was always very responsive and helpful. Everything was well-organized and smooth. Highly recommend Kawira!

Incredible experience. The gorillas were amazing and we were able to get very close (within a couple of metres!). Our driver from Kigali Jean Paul was extremely nice, informative and very helpful on the day. Our short term visas for Uganda were organised at the border. Please make sure you have cash for tips, as there are numerous people that you’re encouraged to tip throughout the day e.g x2 drivers, multiple guides, rangers, performers who engage in a traditional dance prior to the hike etc Make sure to bring snacks, as lunch is in the mid afternoon. For returning to Rwanda, ensure you have a multi entry visa, otherwise you will need to pay the visa entry (for certain passports) again when you return.

I had a wonderful time touring the gorillas and seeing a Batwa dance performance with this company. The staff could not have been more helpful, more hospitable, or more polite. (I came in all the wrong clothes, but they were so accommodating!) I highly recommend Kawira's gorilla tour in Uganda, and also the Batwa dance excursion.

I did a one day gorilla safari from Kigali to Mgahinga National Park today. The experience was first class. Hassan on the Rwandan side and Vincent on the Ugandan side were both excellent, and very helpful. They couldn't do enough for me. In the run up to the day, Ian answered all my queries very quickly. Seeing the gorillas was a once in a lifetime experience. The guide, porter, and trackers were all faultless. Saw two silverbacks, one blackback, one juvenile and a mother and baby up close, and was even (very) gently pushed aside by one silverback. Would give six stars if I could.

My friends and I did the gorilla trekking from Kigali & I have to say it is one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Our guide Rukundo was exceptional & I would highly recommend him for any guiding in Rwanda. He truly went above and beyond to give us the most unique & wonderful experience. We felt safe & comfortable in his care & I will be referring him to my friends visiting Rwanda next year. Kabira Safaris made our planning seamless & easy & I highly recommend. Thank you Kabira & Rukundo!!

Kawira Safari ( Ian ) Sticked to Promised Itineraries & Accommodations, he even offer us complimentary drop off to the airport when our hotel in Kigali failed to honored the promised free transfer !! Our driver cum guide ( Godfrey ) was very patience and experienced. Would definitely recommend Kawira Safari to anyone looking for the experience of a lifetime in Rwanda / Uganda. Our sincere thank to both Ian & Godfrey.

We stayed in Kigali before we went gorilla trekking in Rwanda and had the best experience and education with our driver/tour guide Denis (with one 'n'). We learned so much from him that we are returning home with the desire to learn more about Rwandan history. Denis also is knowledgeable about the different cultures of people from Kigali to the Volcanoes area. He is a safe and DEPENDABLE driver who know how to navigate the chaos of the roads. We HIGHLY recommend him for any and all tours or driving!

Although the transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla NP was good, with our driver Kinote Ian, Kawira Safaris has never paid a refund of $2,000 USD due us primarily from cancelled airline tickets that we purchased through them. We are also out another $600 USD for an unused Uganda Gorilla permit purchased through Kawira. Ian acknowledges the debt for the cancellations but has not been forthcoming with regard to any proceeds Kawira may have received for the valuable gorilla permit.

We did the gorilla trekking tour from Kigali. Our tour guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The experience is almost not describable, such close up with the gorilla families, almost in touching distance. Our two-night stay at Ingagi Park View lodge was special, where do you get a complementary foot massage after the trekking? The visit to the Ellen DeGeneres - Dian Fossey research center is fun and educational. Highly recommended. Africa Explore tour really take care of their guests.
