What To Expect
Mount Hakodate
Mount Hakodate (函館山, Hakodateyama) is a 334 meter high, wooded mountain at the southern end of the peninsula on which much of central Hakodate is located. On clear days and nights, in particular, the views from the mountain are spectacular and included among Japan's three best night views alongside the views from Nagasaki's Mount Inasa and Kobe's Mount Rokko. Facilities at the summit, which is accessible by ropeway, bus or car, include observation platforms (free of charge), souvenir shops, a cafe and a cafeteria style restaurant.
Onuma Quasi-National Park
Designated as a "quasi national park" and located only twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, Onuma Park (大沼公園, Ōnuma Kōen) is known for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic volcano, Mount Komagatake. Onuma Park can be easily visited in either a day trip from Hakodate or on a stop over on a journey between Hakodate and Sapporo, since most limited express trains between the two cities stop at Onuma Koen Station, the central railway station.

5.00Our tour of Hakodate with Kazuo Sumi was great. He was knowledgeable and friendly. His English was great, his knowledge of the history of Hakodate was very enlightening. All in all a fabulous day. My only negative the tour company over charged.

5.00Hubert was a great guide! We could have probably seen Hakodate on our own, but Hubert made it so much better! He loves this area and included good history that we would have missed! We ended at the warehouse and were able to look around at our leisure before a short walk to the ship!

4.00Our guide took us to Goryeski park and the tour. We got a really good overview of the city from the tower, and a great history of the area and the fort/magistrates offices. We then went to the Jolly jellyfish for lunch, and finally to the historic warehouse shopping area. Good tour.

5.00We did the 4 hour tour. The guide met us at the cruise port. We walked to the morning market, then to the bus to the observation tower and fort. Then took a tram to the Mt. Gondola entrance. Took the gondola up for an impressive view. Then walked down through the church district and another market set in old brick buildings. Finished the day at the market, where we had a nice dinner and drinks.
