In total, there are over 750 bird species in Zambia, across a range of environments. Wetland and swamp areas attract a variety of waterfowl, from herons, storks and ibises to the stately crowned and wattled cranes. Zambia's the most sought-after wetland species, the shoebill stork, is the highlight of any bird-watching break to Zambia's Bangweulu wetlands. The birding highlights of Zambia's drier areas include the country's only truly endemic bird species, the Chaplin's barbet - with its distinctive red eye patch. Other colorful specialties in Zambia include Bohm's bee-eater, racket-tailed roller and spotted creeper. We had the best guide we have had in the whole Africa, a walking and talking dictionary who taught us many things we didn't know. We saw our first giraffes ever and some zebras, baboond, lizards and of course many birds, including marabus, Egyptian geese, bee eaters, flycatchers, saddlebill storks, fork-tailed drongos, hadeda ibises, red-billed hornbills and white backed vultures. Going birding on a hot day in the afternoon was not a good idea since the madame started to feel faint so please do it in the morning if it's really hot. Also binos are a plus but not a must (we didn't have any). You get a chance to see other animals than just birds so it's a perfect safari tour even if birds are not your greatest passion on earth.

Fantastic morning birdwatching with Martin, who is so knowledgeable and passionate about wildlife as well as an excellent spotter. Our driver was excellent and dropped us at 2 sites to visit. We also saw 6 zebra, a hippo mum and baby, a breeding herd of elephants, impala groups and 100s of birds. Martin asked what birds if like to see and told me a lot about their habitats and habits.

Our guide, Martin, was so knowledgeable about the birds and took us to a few places to find as many types of birds as possible. He was fun to talk with and gave us lots of great information about the birds and Zambia.

I had searched the internet for weeks looking for a morning birding safari on the Zambia side for our last morning of our 4 day Victoria Falls visit. We were also needing to get to the LVI airport that afternoon for our flight to JoBurg. When I emailed Savannah Southern our needs, they quickly responded, offering my wife and I a 6 hr birding safari and delivery to the airport at the end of the safari for a very reasonable price. We were met promptly at the Zambian border at 6:00 am by Chiinga, our birding guide and within minutes we were hunting birds. It turns out the Chiinga is the birding Guru for Victoria Falls and surrounding areas. He helped us find most of our target birds and some we weren’t even aware of in the area. We are so happy that we discovered Savannah Southern. Give them a chance to meet your safari and transportation needs in Vic. Falls!
