Wat Phra That Doi Suthep or Doi Suthep Temple, one of northern Thailand’s most important and beautiful temples, located near the top of Doi Suthep (Mount Suthep). It is an important pilgrimage spot for the devout and is sacred site to many Thai people. Visitors can take the 306 steps staircase or ride on a cable car to reach the pagoda. Enjoy the magnificence of the temple with its Golden Chedi glowing and spectacular views of Chiang Mai City and its surroundings. Then, continue to visit Palad Temple or Wat PhaLat. While it is not a particularly beautiful temple building, it features magical temple grounds including a waterfall, forest paths and stunning views of the city. Finally, we start trekking down from Palad Temple to base of Doi Suthep - Pui National park on Monk trail about 2 kilometers or about 45 minutes.

What To Expect
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

It takes a little physical strength, but it's worth participating

5.00I joined with my aunt, who is in her 70s. My guide Noom explained it to me in a friendly and easy-to-understand manner without being nasty to me, who is not good at English. Also, the driver, Boo, was a very pleasant person and cared about things. I couldn't remember everything about the plants and trees that were unfamiliar to me in Japan, but I learned a part of Thai culture. At the temple, I listened with interest to Thai Buddhism, which is similar but different from Japanese Buddhism. The weather up until the day before meant that the trek down was supposed to be an up trek, which was physically a bit difficult for my aunt, but she returned home feeling desperately confident in her physical strength.

5.00Nui is a great guide. Very enthusiastic and good company. The trip was a good mix of temple and walking with some views and a journey through the streets of Chiang Mai.

5.00We had a lovely morning exploring these temples. Our guide, Noom, was really knowledgeable, and considerate of our pace as we hiked the trail. The lower shrine was tranquil and simple, a lovely place to sit and be. The upper shrine was busy and more commercial, but nonetheless fascinating for its place in the Thai story and identity. The views were gorgeous.
