Praca Pedro II
Praça Pedro II is also known as Largo do Palácio and stands out for being the starting point of the city. It was there that the French built a fort, which eventually became the Palace of the Lions (seat of the state government). In addition, they built works that left a rich architectural ensemble for the city. Other important constructions of the place are the City Hall Building, the Episcopal Palace, founded by the Jesuits in the 17th century, the Sé Catedral and small townhouses. Finally, the place also houses a light source installed in front of the Cathedral and a bronze sculpture of Mãe D´Água, by Newton Sá.
Praca Benedito Leite
After undergoing a recent renovation, Praça Benedito Leite is ready to receive tourists, with a new floor, renovation of the sidewalk and bandstand, new lighting, the recovery of the statue of Benedito Leite and the entire infrastructure of the place, besides the planting of Pau-Brasil (brazilwood), oiti and ipês.

São Luís is a surprising city, although it is often seen only as a gateway to explore the natural wonders of Maranhão, such as the famous Lençóis Maranhenses. But it’s definitely worth dedicating at least one or two days: it’s a place rich in colonial history, Afro-Brazilian culture and reggae music, all wrapped up in a unique and lively atmosphere. The heart of the city is the Old Town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The facades covered with Portuguese azulejos, the cobbled streets and the quiet squares tell a deep and fascinating story, even if partly overlooked. Some buildings are well restored, others in a state of neglect, but this contrast gives a melancholic charm The city overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and offers some urban beaches, although not all are ideal for swimming. A must-see before the Lençóis Maranhenses are enchanted.”
