The walled village of Monsaraz is located atop a hill overlooking the Guadiana River and the modern Spanish border. Archaeological evidence indicates that the village has been occupied, in some form, since prehistory – understandable given its important location.
The picturesque town boasts historic monuments, traditional homes, restaurants, cafes, and shops selling locally made products. Particularly notable is the Castle of Monsaraz, built by the Portuguese King Dinis in the 14th century.
Join us on this tour to discover the enchanting medieval village and castle of Monsaraz. We’ll start by picking up everyone at the Roman Temple in Évora, then embark on a scenic 45-minute drive to the historic village of Monsaraz.

Join us on this tour to discover the enchanting medieval village and castle of Monsaraz. We’ll start by picking up everyone at the Roman Temple in Évora, then embark on a scenic 45-minute drive to the historic village of Monsaraz. Upon reaching Monsaraz, we’ll embark on a leisurely stroll through the charming village, granting you the chance to capture memorable photos and wander through its alluring narrow lanes. Visits to the interiors of the town's churches, the small Fresco Museum, and the House of Inquisition are not included in the tour due to uncertainty regarding their hours, especially off-season. However, we will give visitors some free-time to explore these on their own should they wish.

We had an amazing time on this tour! We first were very excited to find out that Bianca was from Toronto, and her partner has also lived there, so we felt like instant friends! They are both so knowledgeable about Monsaraz, and as archeologists, they shared some very interesting information with us. Monsaraz is a must visit in our opinion, and this tour is definitely the way to go, book it!

We had a tremendous 1/2 day with archaeologists Bianco and Goncalo. They are knowledgeable, flexible, friendly and kind and one is fluent in English (her first language) and one in Portuguese (his) == a dynamic duo! This is an extraordinary location, living up to every picture you see of it and our guides were definitely enthusiastic about sharing it with us. Highly encourage everyone to look no further and book this trip!

Monsaraz is a beautiful small hill town 30 mins from Evora. Our guides Bianca and Goncalo have given the tour a number of times so we definitely had the benefit of their vast knowledge. On top of that they were both archeologists which gave them added insight. Definitely recommend the Iberian Heritage Tour.

This was a very enjoyable tour. Goncalo and Bianca were great tour guides. As archaeologists they shared things we would not have known had we done the trip ourselves. The views from the castle are spectacular. We lucked out as it was a clear sunny day.

The tour was just amazing. I highly recommend this company. They are full of knowledge/information and I will definitely use them again if I come back to Évora. Very accommodating, the van is spacious, safe and comfortable. We were texted the day before about the pick up time and pick up spot. They were on time and drove very safely in the freeway.

I recently had the special pleasure of visiting Monsaraz with Iberian Heritage Tours. It is hard to imagine two more delightful people than Bianca and Gonçalo who own this business as well as host its tours. Not only are they delightful people, they are also archaeologists and able to add so much interesting information to what you are looking at. This was definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Portugal, and I cannot recommend this tour company enough. (Next trip to Portugal: IHT trip to Marvao!:)
