Hallstatt is exactly as beautiful as one would hope it to be. If you take this tour, just know that you will not have time to do everything there is to do there so I suggest skipping the bus ride back to Salzburg and instead take the train from just across the lake. When you arrive in town, go to the very end of town and take your pictures of the town against the mountain. It really doesn’t get more beautiful than that view! It looks straight out of a fairytale. We took the boat ride across the lake to see the town from the water, but if you opt to take the train back, this can be skipped until the end of the day. The funicular runs every 15 minutes so plan accordingly. We ran out of time to see it which was disappointing. Learn from our mistake and skip the bus back so you can truly appreciate the town.

The good: Hallstatt is stunningly beautiful! Absolutely worth the visit! Definitely go! The bad: The drive is approximately 1 1/2 hours each way—to and from Hallstatt—which leaves about two hours to explore the town. That’s not enough time to do more than two or three things: a 20 minute boat ride; 35 minute+ funicular ride; shopping; and/or lunch. This would be a 5 out of 5 star trip if guests had just one extra hour in Hallstatt. The solution: Take the bus to the Hallstatt and take the train back to Salzburg.
