Once strictly reserved for imperial palaces and ancient nobility to adorn their treasured lacquerware, this art form represents the pinnacle of oriental aesthetics—embedding the iridescence of the sea into the elegance of wood. In this exclusive workshop, we bridge the gap between ancient tradition and modern fashion. You will begin by learning the fascinating cultural significance behind these 'shells of light,' understanding why they were symbols of status and wealth in ancient China. Then, bypassing the complex industrial processing, you will focus purely on the artistic design: selecting natural, color-shifting shell pieces to compose a pattern that reflects your unique style. You will leave not just with a souvenir, but with a stunning, personalized brooch—transforming a piece of Chinese history into a wearable accessory for your daily life."

As someone new to Shanghai and eager to learn more about the arts, this was an incredibly welcoming experience. The guide was both friendly and deeply knowledgeable, offering thoughtful insight into the craftsmanship behind mother-of-pearl works. She also shared the symbolic meaning behind my brooch of choice—the lotus—which made the piece feel even more personal and significant. The space itself was warm and accommodating, with tea and snacks provided and soft, comforting music playing in the background. Conversation flowed easily as we discussed the history of the art form, its cultural significance, and other traditional Chinese artistic practices. The instructor even demonstrated her own work, creating a hairpin adorned with intricate, colorful floral details that showcased remarkable precision and artistry. Participants are encouraged to freely customize the colors and design of their brooch. Once completed, the staff carefully package the piece and even provide extra mother-of-pearl chips and adhesive gel in case any pieces shift during transport, allowing for easy repairs. Overall, it was a meaningful and beautifully curated experience. I left not only with a timeless piece of jewelry, but with a deeper appreciation for the artistry and tradition behind it.

the teacher is very knowledgeable and patient. You can create your own thing but we choose to go with the classic ones that the teacher provide, which means wish for fortune and good luck. i'll put that back in our living room lol.
