Breakfast early and start your climb up the steep and muddy trail before the heat kicks in. The summit boasts stunning views on clear days, and the surrounding area is a designated forest reserve. The cloud forest is amazingly diverse, with several orchid species and endemic Fijian birds to keep an eye out for. The return distance is around 10km, but we allow approx 6 hours for plenty of rest stops and a break at the top.
After returning to the homestay in Navai, relax and shower before heading further along the Nadrau plateau and to the tucked away Naga village. You'll get some great views along the way. Settle in to your new surroundings and take a short walk with a community guide if you still have the energy before meeting your hosts and being formally welcomed. Enjoy a talanoa (chat) over a bowl of kava and a fresh, locally sourced dinner prepared by the village.

Enjoy a final swim in the river or cool off in the shade before a final climb back up to Nubutautau village.
Sigatoka
After your morning hike, depart Nubutautau and head by 4WD vehicle down to Sigatoka, enjoying sweeping views across the watersheds for the Ba and Sigatoka rivers, then on to Nadi or Suva and the end of your adventure.

One of the most amazing experiences one can ever take on. The hiking was 5/5 from the wonderful local guides, full with knowledge to the breathtaking views and terrain of the Fijian Highlands. Accomodation was outstanding, we were well taken care of, each village's hospitality brought warmth and love with plenty food. This experience alone still feels like a dream. Thank you talanoa for gifting this gem. I recommend it to everyone since doing it. The beauty of Fiji is found in the interior. Big thanks to Mr.Ben for everything.

My partner and I had an amazing time on the Hiking Adventure with Talanoa Treks, we cannot not recommend this experience enough. The villages we visited were absolutely beautiful, definitely no risk of going hungry the food was all delicious (and often vegetarian!). The views on the hikes were exceptional, completely worth the climbs, the guides were very professional with lots of knowledge about local flora/fauna and you take plenty of breaks to take it all in. Talanoa Treks staff- Jake and Makayla were very professional and helpful, Jake taught us loads about Fijian culture and traditions as we travelled between the villages. We will be telling our friends and families to sign up to Talanoa Treks adventures, the whole thing was superb and a way to explore a less touristy side of Fiji.

We were very lucky that Talanoa Treks was able to accommodate our schedule and run the 3 night trip a little early. It was a bit wet and muddy on the trails but that only added to the adventure. This trip is definitely for those who want to see the beauty of the highlands and experience the genuine friendliness of the Fijian people. The villages were so hospitable and the food was amazing, the cava ceremonies and stories were unforgettable and all of the guides were top-notch. We learned so much about this wonderful country and would highly recommend the trip to the curious and those willing to get out of your comfort zone. Vinaka!

What a fantastic experience! We were extremely fortunate that it was the last 4-day trek of the year and it turned out to be a private one with just the two of us and Ben! If you have not been to the heart of Fiji you have not experienced the true Fiji! Learning so much about the history, seeing Fiji's remote traditional villages and getting to know their inhabitants offers a wonderful and unique contrast to the admittedly very nice beaches. We were not very lucky with the weather but despite of this we would not want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Ben was a great guide and so were the local guides in the three villages. Because of the wet conditions it was too dangerous to go all the way to the top of Mt. Tomaniivi but even the 2/3 of the trek through dense vegetation of the cloud forest were impressive. The hike from Naga to Nubutautau was quite strenuous but offered fantastc views of landscapes and narrow river valleys. We have only the most positive comments for this unique trek! Thank you Talanoa Treks and Ben!

I booked this trip as a mother-daughter adventure before she goes off to boarding school. Growing up and living in Fiji we have gone on a lot of adventures but this was one experience that we have never been on and it was truly a special and unforgettable trip for the both of us! The scenery is truly spectacular - from the rainforest, grasslands to the river beds. What made it truly special for us were the people. From when Ben picked us up, the talanoa (stories) he shared with us on the drive up to the highlands to the local guides who guided and Jake with his incredible knowledge of the flora and fauna of the mountains. Hearing the villagers tell their own stories were priceless. So appreciative of what Talanoa Treks is doing to support these remote communities, encouraging them to share their incredibly rich history and keeping their stories alive. The food was great and we couldn't have asked for a better weather conditions. If you are looking for a truly authentic Fiji village living experience with a bit of hiking thrown in - book this exprience. You will not regret is. I can't wait to go back and take the rest of our family.

Our family - two adults, two teen boys - we looking for something more meaningful than a resort stay, the adults were looking for an experience that involved talking and walking. We walked through beautiful and varied terrain, up and down, paddocks at one stage, hauling ourselves up a vertical mountain holding onto tree roots at other times. I walk every day but was not prepared, it was still fabulous. The person at the back of our group had no ACL in one knee and needed two sticks, but still made it everywhere with the patient and kind guides from the villages. Dinners and nights in homestays and the village hall was great, feeling like I was eating decent food was great (the streets of Suva and Nadi have great Indian but not really "Fijian" if fast food/fried is discounted) - dahl, taro leaves in coconut milk, pumpkin curry, rice and all the tubers... I highly recommend wearing shoes with cleats, long sleeves with collar, cap, long pants with pockets. The guides bounced around in white gumboots and shorts, but it's their patch. Jake and the team were incredibly generous answering my questions about Fiji, the politics, the infrastructure projects this tourism helps to fund, gendered issues in the villages, were full of interesting information about the flora, introduced species, economics, how Fijian only has one third person pronoun... Glorious holiday, highly recommended.

Live my tour with Takanoa treks. Ben and Jake were great throughout and were very knowledgeable about local plants and history. We had an exceptional experience at all 3 villages we stayed at. The food was incredible and they were all so welcoming and friendly. Definitely recommend getting to the highlands during a trip to Fiji to really experience an authentic experience.
