Our journey starts with a relaxing coffee in the delightful village of Calles, a hidden gem nestled in the Spanish countryside. Stroll through its charming streets and take in the sights, including the impressive historic church and the quirky, much-loved “Frog Fountain”, a favorite among locals and visitors alike. It’s the perfect way to ease into the day and soak up the authentic charm of rural Spain.
Ruta del agua
We begin our walk along the Fluvial section, a stunning riverside trail where you’ll experience the beauty of fast-flowing rapids, the refreshing sounds of nature, and rich historical sights. Along the way, we’ll visit a 19th-century mill that hides a surprising and colorful mural inside, and explore ancient caves once used for food storage during the Arabic era—an atmospheric step back in time. Wander through a tranquil corridor of eucalyptus trees, soaking in the fresh forest air, before we pause beside the river to enjoy a peaceful picnic lunch surrounded by nature

5.00What a great hike! The route has a little bit of everything; ascents, descents, sweeping vistas and a beautiful river. Not to mention the aqueduct itself and the great company. I will definitely take this hike again.

5.00I have been on this and many other hikes run by Howard from the Valencia Excursions Club and can honestly say I've loved them all. I was lucky enough to have this group recommended to me when I first moved to live in Valencia and I still go out with them as often as I can. I love that the hikes are a chance to meet new people and are not just a frog march. They start with a coffee and tostada in a small village and finish with a well earned drink at the end. These hikes are for me the perfect balance of social, history, exercise and discovering small villages and beautiful countryside and coastal trails that I would otherwise never know about. I can recommend them wholeheartedly.

5.00A beautifully scenic hike with lots of variety. It was a bit scary to cross the aqueduct but also a bit of a thrill. It’s not really dangerous as it’s as it’s wider than a sidewalk, but still unnerving. Howard was a great guide, providing lots of information about the history of the area as well as being good fun to hangout with. The swimming hole along the Ruta de Agua was an idyllic little place to jump in and cool off for a bit.

5.00This hike was amazing. The scenery was great and walking through Chelva was like stepping back in time. Our guide, Howard, was a wealth of knowledge and so fun to talk to. You do need to really be prepared to hike - I think it was about 9 miles! Would absolutely book a tour with them again.

5.00The two routes are highly recommended to do it with the children, so that they can enjoy the spectacular views and places that are located along the way. It is impressive to see the Roman Aqueduct and observe the carving made in the living rock of the place for this purpose.

5.00I have been on a handful of hikes with Howard and this one is special. It is a perfect blend of history, nature, waterfalls/streams for summer and includes walking through Chelva, a beautiful town. The aqueduct has survived close to 20 centuries and the fact that you can literally walk on it is amazing. The tunnels cut through the rocks are fascinating and takes my respectg for the historic humans to another level. I doubt if the trip would have been the same if it wasn't for Howard, who is very knowledgeable, friendly and organised. A big thumbs up from me!
