I provide a technical, high-context immersion into the Northern Isles’ maritime and prehistoric landscape, bypassing the standard sightseeing loop. Grounded in archaeology and archival research, I offer an intelligently paced exploration from Neolithic heartlands to the naval legacy of Scapa Flow.
I avoid off-the-shelf itineraries and scripted lectures. Using a dedicated MPV platform (max 4 guests), the circuit is recalibrated in real-time to prioritize the quiet, elemental scale of the sites.
We move at your pace, allowing for adaptability to deep-dive into specific interests. You leave with a grounded understanding of how these sites function as a unified landscape. Whether navigating cruise logistics or staying locally, the day is optimized and customisable for your timeframe.

Calum was absolutely fantastic. He was vivacious and as a native extremely knowledgeable about Orkney Island. He found out of the way places to take us to including an ancient Neolithic chambered cairn. He took us to Skara Brae which is a must see. He was so well versed he made the site of Skara Brae even more interesting. You definitely need a guide for the sites. We took a private tour with Calum and it was so worth it. He even went out of his way to make sure I had my shopping fix in Kirkwall! Without a doubt, using a local home born Orkney Island guide Calum is the way to go!

Calum, an Orkney islander, was an excellent and very knowledgable guide, who took us on a detailed tour of Orkney covering the main sites, landscape and the famous archaelogical sites, neolithic and mesolithic. His knowledge enabled him to tailor our times to avoid the rush with the tour buses, thus giving us a more intimate experience with the locations. Calum lived experience of Orkney gives insight into the history and landscapes of Orkney. He also dropped us right back with our luggage for the afternoon ferry.

My wife and I visited Orkney in early May 2026 and rounded out our visit to the islands with a full day tour with Calum of HistoricOrkney.com. What a great and informative day! Calum’s extensive Orkney knowledge and friendly accommodating approach proved to be exactly what we hoped it would be. The cost of the tour was well worth the money as we were able to visit everything we had hoped to and more! Highly recommend and will certainly reserve a day with him when we go back in the future. Definite 5 stars!

Calum is a local guide bringing with him a lifetime of experience of living on the island that can't be beat. He caters the day to meet your interests, and goes above and beyond to make it special for you. I can not possibly recommend him highly enough. Break away from the crowds that come with the bus and cruise tours and treat yourself with this one on one experience. You won't regret it. He made Orkney our favorite stop on our Scotland vacation.

We took a private day tour of Historic Orkney and went on the adventurous hike to the Old Man of Hoy under the expert guidance of Callum. He, a native born, is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about everything Orkney - its history, geology, people and, of course, ruins. At each site, he gave us an in-depth description and allowed us all the time we wanted. My husband and I have used many guides among our frequent travels, and Callum is among the very best.

The private tour is the way to go to get the best experience of Orkney. The history and insights at each stop with Calum is well worth the money vs reading signs. Highly recommend!

Excellent local guide! Very friendly and helpful, but tailored everything to our particular interests (especially archaeological). Calum was well informed (in a subject area we were very familiar with), was not afraid to say he didn't know but would find out, and was full of local color about life on the Orkneys.
