Gjesvaerstappan Nesting Cliffs, Nordkapp
Here, we board our comfortable boat and head 15 kilometers west to the renowned Gjesværstappan Nature Reserve. Only ten minutes into the cruise, we’ll reach the bird cliffs, where the diverse arctic wildlife begins to reveal itself. To keep warm and cozy, arctic suits are available onboard, and complimentary coffee, biscuits, and a selection of souvenirs add to the experience. Wander freely around the deck, ask questions, or even chat with the captain. Restroom facilities are provided for your convenience. Wildlife Encounters and Birdwatching Prepare for close encounters with one of Norway's most diverse seabird populations! The Gjesværstappan Reserve is home to vast colonies of puffins and kittiwakes. These charming puffins, easily identified by their vivid beaks, nest in burrows across the grassy hills. The nesting season, from April to September, brings the cliffs alive with activity. You might even spot White-tailed Eagles gliding above, hunting along the cliffs.

I booked the Honningsvåg Shore Bird Safari Adventure on June 24, 2025, for the scheduled date of August 14, 2025. As a birder traveling by cruise, this was the only day we would be docked in Honningsvåg, and I was genuinely excited for the opportunity to observe Arctic birdlife. Unfortunately, the tour company sent a cancellation notice late at night on August 13—just hours before the scheduled departure—without offering any explanation. This left me with no time to seek alternative arrangements. I reached out to inquire about the reason for the cancellation, but received no response. This experience was deeply disappointing. I would strongly caution others against booking with a company that operates with such poor communication and disregard for its customers.

I booked this tour assuming that it was a more exclusive experience and that we would not be in a herd of cruise passengers. The listing clearly states that it will be a max of 35 participants. We went to the meet up point and could not locate anyone from the tour operator - My Holiday Online. We asked around and finally someone pointed us to a tour operator who said we were with North Cape Tours and put us on a bus with 55 other people. There was NOT a personal tour guide and the boat for the bird safari actually had about 90 people on the boat. Everyone else in the bus said they booked through North Cape Tours who clearly was the operator of the tour. After the tour was over, I checked the website for North Cape Tours and saw that I was charged 25% more for the tour than if I had booked it direct with North Cape tours. While we did enjoy the tour - the price we paid was way too high given what we received. And the listing is very deceptive and the meet up instructions we not clear - we almost missed the bus due to poor instructions.

It has been my dream since I was a child to see a puffin in the wild and this tour made it happen. Finding the tour starting point was a bit of a challenge as the directions as to where the tour was to start were not sufficiently specific. We managed to track them down and enjoyed the narrated bus trip to the boat dock. The boat was a good size for our group. The operators provided insulated overalls to everyone, including children, so that we would be comfortable on the water. It was a gray chilly day so they were much appreciated. They fit easily over your clothes without having to remove your shoes. If you didn't want to be outside, there was a seating area below deck with plenty of space. Of course, the best place was standing on the bow deck. We sailed out into the harbor to bird island and were not disappointed at the number of water fowl. We even say about six white tailed eagles. The puffins literally numbered by the thousands and we got as close as one could get in a boat. It was the perfect amount of time on the water. One operator narrated over the ship's loudspeaker and two others were out on the bow mixing with the guests and answering questions. They were terrific, very friendly and very informative. This was my favorite tour in Norway. The bus ride to and from the dock was narrated on tape. The script was filled with dry humor which I loved. Our bus driver was super friendly and a great driver. We even saw reindeer in the wild! I don't know if I will ever get back to Norway, much less Honningsvag, but if I do I will take this tour again.

Once arrived it was difficult to see birds without binoculars. The captain did a great job in pointing out different types of birds, but sometimes hard to understand due to natural noise but he tried . There was an additional crewman on deck to help. Seas were slightly choppy as well. Bus driver Gerard did a great job

Incredible bird safari and a safe, secure boat. On site we borrowed warm suits so you don’t have to bring that. Nice and knowledgeable guides.

Nice trip. The bus to the boat was comfortable and we thoroughly enjoyed to bird sanctuary. The puffins were particularly impressive.
